Wireless network issue

IS there any way to block certain wireless networks? In trying to set up a wireless VPN connection, the laptop I'm using keeps seeing my neighbors wireless network and the vpn is giving me trouble because of it. Sometimes, I can be a foot away from my wap and all I can connect to is my neighbors. I'm using winxp on a fujitsu lifebook b, with a cisco aironet 350 PC card. The router is a D-Link 614+. Thanks.

I should also add that this laptop will move from a office with a wireless network to a home with a wireless network. The home location is where all the trouble is. I'm telling you all this so no one says to just tell windows that the ssid is perminant. The user of the PC has no rights to change network settings on the laptop

I've searched all over, still can't find an answer.

maybe im not understanding the problem but cant you just change the channel? not shure about the d-link wireless router but on the linksys router you can change it (defaults to 6) then you have to set it on your wireless nics too.

Channel is not a factor. No matter what I change it to, it picks up the other network.

did it occur to you to ever actually tell your neighbors that they are broadcasting?

Of course but how can they reduce their signal? I've never seen a router that can do that.

well, unless they want every idiot with a wireless network within a mile to see their every keystroke, theyll have to do something. there are secure wireless networks, so it certainly can be done.
a google search of wireless network security (http://www.google.com/search?q=wire...etwork+security) turned up the following, among many others:

Still dont understand why changing the channel doesnt work, your card shouldnt see the other network if its on a different channel.
as far as security about the only choice for a home user right now is to enable WEP encryption on the router. This encrypts all the data thats broadcasted but will also slow down performance a little.
