Yep.
I'm upgrading soon, although nothing to extravagant.
Right now, I have:
AMD XP 1700+
ABIT KG7
Geforce 2 Ultra
SB Live! 5.1
Dual WD 100GB Special Edition drives
The only things I'll be upgrading are the motherboard and ram, since I can't afford to do anything else for now. And since I can't afford to do any major upgrading, I was thinking about picking up an nForce 2 board. My question is however, is the onboard video and sound solution better then what I have now? I'm basically looking for a temporary fix until I get my tax returns so I can grab the rest.
Also, what nForce 2 boards do you recommend?

Didnt nVidia not include integrated video with the NF2 chipset? I dont see any video listed for any of them.
The ASUS and Chaintech NF2 mobos are the best. They perform just about the same, so either one really. I prefer Asus because they make really good quality stuff, they have a fast RMA dept and their software/bios are great. The chaintech is more expensive too(depending on the model, they both have 2 types). The chaintech also comes with Rounded IDE cables.
I would take a SB Live 5.1 over onboard sound any day.

i agree with SKYHN on this one. look into an Asus or Chaintech board and just use your old Geforce 2 Ultra and SB Live! 5.1. i wouldn't focus too much on the integrated features of the board, since you know already that you will be adding a new video and sound card on down the road.

Just make sure that any MB you buy had a decent AGP slot. AGP 4X was and 8X is the newest.

I have always prefered about, so I would personnally go with the ABIT NF7. When you get a Nforce 2 board get two sticks of PC3200(400mhz) RAM to take advantage of the duel DDR ram slots.
You processor is fine and should have no problem and I am sure that your video card works well too.

onboard sound has come a long way, although it still cant compete with a top of the line sound card. it very well could be about the same quality as your sb live.
video, on the other hand, is icky

depends what you do , I mean with a good processor and ram amount you can get good out of your onboard video.... I have a geforce 2 mx 400 and I never had to use its full options... I have an
Athlon XP 1900+
256 PC2700
GF2
Sb Live 5.1
D-link Nic
Asus A7V333
Note : For the gamming I do , an 8or 16MB card would be perfect with my athlon 1900+ at 1.7!

oh and I don't know about it too much but the 1st mainboard bran is it good ?
I have a friend that is convinced hos 1st mainboard running a duron 1200Mhz is better than anyboard running a duron 1200mhz...

Don't forget about A-BIT and TYAN boards... both of those companies are also very reliable and have great track records. TYAN's on the pricey end but A-BIT and ASUS should be about the same.

no, for the games darky plays a gf2 is the minimum. onboard video wont cut it.

So far all the onboard video options for nforce2 ive seen were MX420's, granted the way Onboard is and the fact you have a Geforce 2 Ultra, onboard isnt anything to look forward to.

Actually, unless you start paying in the quadruple digits range, the nforce's soundchip (if you get the nvidia one; some of the nforce boards have a different audio chip) is the best consumer sound you can get on the market.

So the nForce 2's sound is superiour to my Live! yes?
