Press release:
SUNNYVALE, CA -- February 10, 2003 --AMD today introduced the AMD Athlon™ XP processor 3000+ — the world’s highest performing desktop PC processor. Featuring increased cache memory for greater performance, the AMD Athlon XP processor 3000+ outperforms competing desktop PC processors by up to 17 percent on a variety of industry standard software benchmarks.
Those claims appear to be a little off. Reviews:

I dunno about it being the best, the performance looks like its only .5% to 1% lower that the P4 3.06ghz. Depending on the price of this(probably going to be around $450) its not worth the extra money for the P4 for that little bit of performance.
Wheres that damn hammer already?

On the issue of pricing, some of you may be a bit shocked to see flagship AthlonXP 3000+ to be selling for over US$600. On a good note and most likely what many [H] readers are going to want to sink their teeth into anyway, is the 2500+ as we will surely be hoping to see some OCable CPUs in the cheaper range. We are already seeing sub-US$200 pricing on the 2500+ in PIB form. (Processor In a Box)

I guess AMD can't keep making cheap processors forever

Ouch...their low pricing was one of their main draws too

It doesn't bother me too much since I haven't bought a top of the line CPU since my PII 450.
In fact, I just bought a 2100+ TbredB to upgrade my AGOIA 1600+. overclocking++

Long live AMD!

Damn! it just seems there are too many variables in benchmark tests to make a solid conclusion as to which cpu is faster.
this is the kind of s*** that bothers me about these tests..........

So we can safely assume that the Quadro drivers are not well optimized for the Athlon. Which is not really a surprise as most Quadro cards will find a place with a Xeon or Pentium 4 CPU. We tried to get some answers from NVIDIA, but no response yet.

why even do a benchmark test if you are not going to have each cpu in a system that is completely optimized for each respectively?

you have to run them on the same system, otherwise the comparison is meaningless. but benchmarks basically dont mean much anyway, until you get into large differences.

AMD is floundering.
Adding cache is a surefire way of increasing performance slightly... and of increasing cost significantly. They seem content to pass this off on the users though.
Add in the fact that the 3000+ is actually a 2800+ with just the extra cache (same clock speed), and you start to wonder if AMD isn't just ripping you off. Just proves that the athlon is at the end of its line, and AMD knows it.
Too bad they pushed back the hammer till sept, they are most likely going to be a fair distance behind intel by then.
