The nine companies promoting Blu-ray Disc technology--a next-generation recordable DVD format using blue-violet lasers--announced Thursday that licensing will begin Feb. 17. Blu-ray Disc technology allows for 27GB storage capacities on a single-sided 12cm disc. DVDs hold 4.7GB of data. Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Sony and Thomson are known as the "Blu-ray Disc Founders" and have been pursuing a broad acceptance of the format.
Blu-ray technology uses a short-wavelength blue-violet laser instead of the red lasers in current optical drives to read data off discs. The higher-capacity Blu-ray discs will enable the recording of high-definition broadcasts, which offer better picture quality than the more broadly available TV broadcasts.
The full story is at ZDNet.

An interesting specification: the protection layer of the Blu-Ray disc is only 0.1mm, while that of a DVD is 0.6mm.
I wonder if this will change how much scratches affect disc read.

Well, if you cram more infomation per mm, then you'll lose more information per mm in the event of scratching... the technology is not the problem, I think ... it's the material being used to hold the constantly expanding capacity of information that also needs to be addressed...

I like these new discs a lot, I hope they catch on very soon. One thing though, are these for storage or will we start seeing movies like DVD movies on this format? There probably isnt any type of TV/Monitor out now that would be able to show the full quality of something on a disc that size.
Playstation 3 games are going to run on custom 27.5gb Blu-Ray discs, according to what little tidbits that Sony has been putting out about it.

You won't see it soon because the hardware has to proliferate before the discs will be worthwhile.
