Strange noises

Hi, I hope I'm doing this right; I'm new here. My problem is that for a week now I've been hearing strange sounds coming from my computer speakers. I had just re-formatted my hard drive before this started happening. I'm using Windows 2000 Pro.
Six to eight times throughout the course of the day I hear the recorded sounds of a dog barking, gunshots, and a couple of high-pitched synthesizer sounds coming from my speakers. These are actual soundbytes and not just noises. I've looked in Add/Remove programs and can't find any programs that I don't recognize.
Has anyone come across this problem before and can you tell me how to get rid of it?
Thank you,
Bellisimo

could be popups. or some kind of browser hijacking. or a virus. or just something odd with your computer.
start with a virus scan and spyware scan. if you still get noises after youve removed all those, search your computer for files with the .wav extension. see if any match the noises youre getting.

Thank you. What program do I need to do a spyware scan with? (I'm fairly new at all this)
Also could you please elaborate a little more on how to search for the wave file and how to get rid of it if I find one?
I've been scanning for viruses every day for a week and haven't found one.

Adaware is an excellent spyware removal tool:

As for the unneeded wave files, what OS are you using? First try accessing Start > Settings -> Control Panel and then double-click on Sounds ... you should get a list of wave files associated with the basic functions of your system ... try playing each of them and see which one is the culprit(s) ... then just choose [None] from the dropdown list under "Name" for the ones you want to remove...
If none of those sounds are what's causing it, you can do it the more tedious way and scan each wav file under the Windows folder ... go to Start -> Search -> Files or Folders ... Under "Search for files or folders named", type in *.wav then hit Enter ... you should see all the wav files in your system ... now sort them according to location and ignore those that are not in the Windows or Program Files folder, then check each of them if the sound is similar to what you hear...

Hey, thank you so much. I followed your advice and found some of the sounds that I've been hearing and deleted them. Now I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
What would cause those files start acting up for no apparent reason like that?

A virus or spyware.
