ADVICE: new proc or new board and proc?

Right now I have:
1.4 GHz Athlon
Gigabyte 7DX rev 3
GeForce 3
512MB PC2100
All of the other parts will be kept.
I'd like to upgrade the processor to a Athlon XP 2100+ (the best one the current board takes) and add either a Radeon 9700 Pro or a Radeon 9500 Pro. This is all in preparation for Doom III.
What I want to know is if I will notice any significant performance gain just from the processor alone. Will I really need to upgrade the 1.4 if I want good performance from Doom III? I know the video card will be nice, but if the processor doesn't do anything better, I'm guessing that I'd be better off buying a new mobo and RAM as well with something better than the 2100+.
Any suggestions on hardware are greatly appreciated.

You'll have to wait until the game is released to know how it runs on any given hardware set up. About the only thing that's known is that John Carmack figures it'll run about 30FPS on a 9700 pro on max detail.

no reason to upgrade now. you shouldnt be seeing any problems with your current setup, unless something is dying. when companies make a final announcement of the shipping date (ie, when it will actually be in stores), usually the requirements and recommendations are released, if they already arent out (which is usually the case).
youll have plenty of time after the info comes out before the game ships.

I have an Athlon XP 2100 and a Radeon 9500 Pro w/ 128 mb video ram. I love the performance. You will notice a difference in performance. I had a 1.3ghz before and playing games w/ any detail slowed my framerates to a slideshow. I recomend you get both the cpu and card.

Like Null Actor said, whether you'll need to upgrade the CPU or not will only depend on the results when the game comes out.
But regardless, compared to a vanilla 1.3GHz Athlon, a 2100+ will be a major jump.
Chances are, Doom III will tax every available resource, so if you can upgrade, you might as well.
I recently upgraded from a 1800+ with 512MB 2100 DDR RAM on a KT266A equipped mobo with a GF 3 to a 2100+ with 512MB 2700 DDR RAM on a KT400 equipped mobo with a GF 4 Ti4200.
No, I didn't need to upgrade, it just worked out that I could with other systems needing to be built.
I was surprised at the performance increase, it was more than I expected.
You might have to prepare yourself for going to a 2100+ from that 1.3 Athlon.
If you have the dough, I'd recommend a new mobo with 2700 DDR RAM or better.
If not, the CPU and video card will be a major upgrade in themselves.
