How does heatshrink work?

Im gonna put sleeves on all my cables in my new case, and I wanna put heatshrink on the ends to make it look cleaner. But how does heatshrink work? Do you just put it on and then the heat inside the case shrinks it down or what?

Usually all you have to do is stick a lighter under the material and it shrinks pretty quick. Just don't hold the flame under it for long.

Either use a lighter like he said, or sometimes a blowdrier on high will work.
