Micron to Lay Off 10% of Workers

Memory chipmaker Micron Technology announced plans Tuesday to cut approximately 10 percent of its staff amid a sluggish technology market.

The move marks the first widespread layoffs at the company in more than a decade. Micron was launched in 1978 and has become one of the two largest memory makers in the world, along with Korea's Samsung. In 1985, Micron cut its staff total in half while facing intense price competition from Japanese rivals.

In a statement, Boise, Idaho-based Micron said it is looking to lower its costs while continuing to invest in next-generation 0.11-micron manufacturing technology. Micron has about 18,500 workers, according to spokesman Phil Martin.

Micron is headquartered right here in Boise, and the official word is something like 1000 people are going to be cut. Which is pretty big for around here.

I worked at Micron for a couple years as a support tech, and while their memory is great, they are not a great company to work for.

Goes to show that you repeatedly loosed money quarter after quarter something will eventually be cut to save costs.

That's a shame too. I feel bad for all of those people who are going to be cut. My monitor was made by Micron, and I've had it for quite a few years. I have a Micron mousepad too. Hopefully, things will look up. Don't mean to get off topic but, why was it so bad to work there? Poor supervisors?

Well it would be hard to go into detail, but basically they are a company and their goal is to make money. They sugar coat everything for the employees, but fail to deliver. They promise employee bonuses on profitable quarters so they don't pay as high (starting for normal production is only $8 an hour), but when you don't make any money then you don't give bonuses. That and their raises are set on the same profit process. If they don't make money you don't get a raise.

The first year I was there I started at $15 an hour and was told that by year two if I got all my tech training done I would be up to 18.50. I had all the training done by the 3rd month I was there, and when my year was up they denied me the raise and said that there was no budget for performance evals that quarter and to wait until the next. So basically I worked for two years making $15 an hour all a long being lead that I would "eventually" get a pay increase. Our lead tech was making just over $19 an hour and he'd been there 7 years and hadn't had a raise in 3.

I was offered a position making a salary with guaranteed minimum 4% cost of living raise every year. Of course I left, and haven’t been happier since.

My sister still works out there, and hasn't had a pay increase in 4 years. She's in the security services division and makes around $13 an hour.

On a side note, my sister called me a couple hours ago and she was one of the people that was let go. Granted she only did security out there, it still sucks.

I see your point. The job I'm at now promises and can't deliver. I haven't been there very long, but I can tell it's not a great place to work. I'm glad you got out of there when you did, and my regards to your sister for losing her job. Hopefully she'll find something better soon.
