First off... i plan to build a new comp soon and so i was reading through posts on OTS about comp cooling and i was wondering somthing.. ( NEWBIE QUESTION ALERT!! ) Whats a heatsink? Also does it really matter if i buy parts seperatly and build? or get it built with the custom parts i want? and if you think i should buy seperatly and build myself whats a good place to buy?... i thought best buy but it seemed to be more about buying pre built comps... and i cant buy over da net either...

The heatsink is the big piece of metal (or whatever it's made from) that goes on top of your CPU to cool it, it usually has a fan on top too

Buying the parts seperately and building it yourself should be the cheapest way, as the people that build it for you usually charge something for building it.

I don't buy computer parts online, so someone else will have to continue here

If you cant buy anything on the net, then your pretty much out of luck for building your own. Hardly any retail stores carry all the components needed to build a PC, and the ones that do are very expensive.

Costco has good deals on PCs usually. But if you look at an HP, make sure you get every detail about it. I went in there and bought my current PC almost 2 years ago, and I should have gotten more details about it before I bought. I was totally screwed on the ram, 256mb PC800(which might even be PC600), but its 4x64mb sticks, making it extremely expensive to upgrade. Circuit City carries a lot of good PCs with good deals too.

dell has some very nice computers in the prebuilt range, and for decent prices.

as for purchasing parts online, basically, your parents would have to do the actual ordering. just hand the money to them, and they can put the order on their cc.

you can pay someone to custom build for you. but the parts you buy will be at retail. plus thier fee, of course. youd need a chain dedicated to this business to find some of the parts, although a best buy or circuit city will have most of them.

Depending on where you live, you may or may not find local computer shops that sell OEM stuff (doesn't come in a factory-sealed box with manuals and such, but you pretty much get the same thing) for prices that can sometimes even beat online prices. If you buy retail from them it'll probably be cheaper than from CrapUSA or Best-Rip'em-off-Buy.

you're best bet's the local computer shops. if you find a way to buy online, go to pricewatch.com. but you're best bet's the local shops.

then again, dell's got some pretty cheap systems. it'll be hard to beat some of their prices...if you like prebuilt system.

Not everyone has the luxury of living in an area where non-big-name-chain computer stores exist. Even if you did find some independent computer stores, their prices still may not be ideal - though they will be considerably cheaper than buying from Best Buy or CompUSA or the same ilk.

Pricewatch is overrated. Its price listings are hardly reliable, and some companies charge outrageous shipping fees.

NewEgg is a nice place to shop online for parts. Very competetive prices, good shipping rates, and very fast delivery. I only know of one store in the Bay Area that can beat its prices.

pricewatch listings include the shipping charges for that reason

www.googlegear.com generally has decent prices as well.
