DDR RAM Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have an MSI mobo with the KT400 chipset. The mobo has 3 slots that can hold RAM in it. I currently have two sticks of PC2100. I was wondering if it would be worth it to change the RAM to PC2700 or PC3200. My current sticks I bought from my local computer store, so I assume it's generic. I was thinking about getting Mushkin or OCZ cuz it has those cool RAM sinks (I know you can buy them) I just want to know if i'd experience a major performance gain. BTW if I get PC3200 it only allows me to have 2 sticks.

System Specs:
MSI KT4V
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Windows XP Professional

I don't think you'd notice much of it, if anything.

I could be wrong though

You probably won't notice a difference unless you plan to overclock.

Don't get OCZ.

Unless you're planning to upgrade the numbers on your RAM (in terms of MB), you really won't get much of a performance boost in upgrading just the speed of it.

Generic RAM isn't bad at all - IMO, brand name RAM is just a bit overrated. Not that brand name RAM is bad, but I just mean it's not a big difference from generic ones.

So I basically I wont get a massive increase in speed if I get the RAM with a higher BUS speed for normal use?

I'm not gonna OC my system, I'm happy running it at normal.

Exactly. Only way to see a significant difference is if you actually get MORE RAM, not faster RAM.

Sometime's generic RAM chips cause all sorts of errors in Windows. RAM could go bad over time and you should get one that at least has a decent reputation, such as RAM sticks with Samsung chips or a known company.

So far my system has been doing superb, mainly cuz I killed my main hard drive and have a fresh one that is months old, but I have not had any crashes at all, which makes me really happy. Just in case it goes bad, i'll definitely get some name brand stuff.
