Ok I have a second computer and I want it to be a bit stronger :
400Mhz Celeron
256 PC133 SDRAM
SMC NIC
SB-AWE64
Geforce 2MX400 64MB
20GB Maxtor 7200RPM
2GB Caviar 5400RPM (for music and back-up..)
I wanna stick to CELERON but I wanna get a socket 478
Celeron...
Ok I wanna use pretty much everything I have but the MOBO,SOund card
I get a mobo that supports Socket 478 p4s and CELERONs
I want the mobo to support SDRAM
I need about 4PCI Min. and 1 AGP atleast 4X...
I already have a 450 p4 ready PSU with 2 case fans...
What I need help for is : Can someone find me a brand of motherboard that meets my PCI , AGP and SDRAM needs...
I looked at MSI the 645 COMBO - L
CAn someone tell me if I am looking into a not too bad mobo?
Games I play : starcraft, Warcraft III, Counter-strike..
THX A LOT GUYS

Why Celeron. Why not go to AMD Duron or Pentium 4?
Then again, i've never had good luck with Celerons....
Posted by: Bobaroo
Go with AMD it is cheaper and you will get better peformance. How much do you want to spend?
Get the ECS K7S5A PRO SiS® 735 motherboard
And get a AMD Athlon XP 1700+
As for a soundcard get a cheaper SB Live! That system will be able to play WC3, SC etc. And the good thing about that mobo is if you decide to use DDR Ram you don't have to get a whole new Mobo. It has 2 DDR slots and 2 SDRam slots.

I didn't say I wanted AMD ATHLON I wanted a celeron since it is less expensive...
I already have an athlonv XP 2100+ and I want second computer... if AMD is cheaper than buy a celeron then I will..
I dont wanna put more than 200$
Posted by: Bobaroo
Umm A Celeron is not less expensive...and what I put together for you was less then $200.
From Pricewatch:
$83 - Celeron 2.0GHz
$70 - Celeron 1.8GHz
$52 - Celeron 1.7GHz
_____________
$55 - Athlon XP 1800
$49 - Athlon XP 1700
$49 - Athlon XP 1600
See not cheaper...

The TbredB 1700s overclock like a mutha, too (not that you care).

uhh your comparing a 1.5GHz to a 1.7 Celeron and 3 bucks lower for celeron
Posted by: GeForce_4_
Any way I need a motherboard too not just the CPU
plz

Umm yea...That XP 1800+ at 1.53ghz blows away P4's at that speed, let alone celerons.
And I gave you a motherboard in my first post.

Ya see im in canada.. So the CPUs cost more than in USA
(assuming you live in USA)
Therefore I cant put more than 50 sum on a CPU
and about 125 to 150 on a motherboard!

I just checked my case and seems the onboard sound doesnt fit my panel..
its not sideways
its upwards
...

My mistake this motherboard comes with a panel...

you may find this an interesting read.....................

Conclusion: It Promises More than it Delivers
One thing is certain: the Celeron is no longer the hot tip that it used to be, because the entry-level processors from AMD (Athlon XP 1600+ to 1900+) offer more performance for the same money. The Pentium 4 is not even in the running here: the current models are significantly more expensive, but also significantly more powerful than the Celerons.
If all you are looking for is a cheap all-round system, then the Celeron may score some points. Systems with Intel processors still enjoy the best level of support from the industry and benefit from the spotless image of the market leader. However, when buying a computer of this type you really should insist on the 2 GHz model: F for one thing, the performance difference between the Celerons up to 1.4 GHz and the 1.7 or 1.8 GHz models is only minimal - so the 2 GHz model is a better buy. Secondly, the new processor gets nowhere near as hot, and can also be overclocked if required, provided you have a motherboard for 533 MHz.
For the person who really wants to push the processor to its limits: 2.66 instead of 2.0 GHz (533 rather than 400 MHz FSB) should not present any real problems in practice, and can give this little calculating gizmo quite respectable performance. However, this is extremely dependent on the preferred area of application: if you want to compress MP3s or MPEG4 files, the processor speed plays a more significant role than the rest of the CPU architecture. In this context the overclocked Celeron offers an unbeatable price/performance ratio.
Things look very different with 3D games, because the Pentium 4 and the Athlon AP are still clearly superior. For example, when running Quake III and Comanche 4, the Celeron, overclocked up to 3 GHz, is easily beaten by the Pentium 4 at 2.26 GHz.
The conclusion to be drawn is that the Celeron, in its present form, can no longer keep pace with the Athlon XP and Pentium 4 by means of higher clock speeds. The Pentium 4 is considerably faster - but also much more expensive. AMD's Athlon XP does not, as a rule, cost any more, but offers significantly higher performance in some respects (including with DDR333). Anyone making a carefully considered purchase would be better advised to go for an Athlon XP or a Pentium 4.

An ECS K7S5A can be found as cheaply as $82 (CDN). Add that with a $100 AMD XP+, you should be able to just get by spending $200.
Posted by: GeForce_4_
Well ok... but i think I am not going to put 100 bucks alone on the CPU I considered getting a 1600+ Athlon
with the cheapest motherboard possible.. just as long as it works I mean I am just upgrading it to have it a bit stronger than 400.. not to get a gaming machine!

if you choose to buy that board, i would suggest researching to see if they have fixed an issue it has running 2 banks of pc133 sdram. i use that board in a computer that i built for my boy, and it will not run stable with an Athlon XP1800+ (1.5ghz), using two sticks of 256mb pc133 sdram. before i took out one of the sticks of ram, it would only run stable underclocked at (1.1ghz). i tried flashing the bios, and that still did not solve the issue. the only way i have been able to get it to run stable at 1.5ghz, which is what a XP1800+ should run at, was to remove one of the sticks of ram.
because that board supports ddr also, i plan on completely taking the sdram out of it, and then buy one stick of 512mb pc2700 ddr to get the memory back up to 512mb, since it now only has 256mb of pc133 sdram.

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder. I had the same instability from using SD RAM before. I just had to swap it out for DDR and the board runs fine. Also, since it does support both SD and DDR, you can't use both, either one or the other. So unless GeForce_4_ wants to spend extra on DDR, then I would look elsewhere.

Thank you guys... I was looking at Gigabyte and MSI i was intrested in their boards... The ones with an agp and sdram slots... are not to pricey. They are only at about 60 to 80 I should get a an ATHLON XP with it too

Going cheap on the mobo can end up being more costly than going cheap on the CPU...
Just my two pennies.

I have put in 3 of theese motherboards since x-mas.. all went in in min's.. ran great from the first boot.
I have the board running my FTP server on a 800mhz Athlon
as for the 1700 CPU I have one on my epox mobo.. oc'd to 1800 no problems.. my brother has that exact config.. the ECS and the 1700.. can't OC it.. but it runs like a dream
Motherboard supports both PC133 and DDR. but not both at the same time..
