Fried motherboard?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

How do I know when my mobo is shot? I recently unplugged my surge protecter from the wall to paint and when I plugged it back in I heard a loud noise. I just thought it was the monitor, cuz the power switch was still on. But my computer won't boot, I don't even think it completed a POST.

It goes to (and stops at) the very first screen (the one that tells the processor speed and says 'press delete for setup'). I was able to get into setup once though, just didn't have the time to tinker at all with it.

I am guessing I may have fried the mobo? Any advice?

Thanks.

possibly. sounds like you forget to turn off the surge and the comp before you unplugged it. not good

try a visual inspection of the mobo first. if you dont have any spare parts, the only way to be sure is to take it into the shop. if you have spares, you can try switching the cpu, ram, and power supply. looks like either the mobo or cpu has cooked.

you may try unhooking everything but your video card. turn the computer on and see if it does the exact same thing it has been doing. if it still does the same thing, you would really need some of those spare parts Red spoke of earlier.

the one thing that makes me think that it may not be a fried motherboard or cpu, is that i have experienced both of those things, and both of those problems had the exact result when i turned the computer on. Nothing at all would happen. since your computer is atleast starting to boot up, it makes me think it may be that your power supply got screwed by the surge but not totally killed yet. that's just a stab at it though.

edit.........just to be clear, when i said nothing would happen earlier, that means my hard drive would spin up, all of my fans would come on, but there was never anything that would come to the monitor. the light on the monitor would never go green, it would just stay amber.
