need help with startup message

sure would appreciate someone's advice!
my sony vaio laptop (p3), only boots up to a blank screen with the message "VMM32VXD cannot start windows because file not found or damaged"
cannot get into safe mode either.
is my laptop fried? any way to recover from this?
