I need a new video card and I think it's gonna be an ATI Radeon 9500 pro, from what I've read and heard, it should be pretty fast, right?
Any reason not to buy it and/or advice for something different are appreciated

ATI drivers suck...besides that I hear it is a good card.

I can live with that
That wasn't too negative, I guess this is gonna be it then.
Thanks

So, I finally got it (those things are damn hard to get here ), installed it in the worst way possible (pulled out the old card, put in the new one, installed drivers), and it works
I just 3DMark03'd it, and got 2267 points, and I'm really sure I can get higher than that (no, benchmarks don't matter, but it's still better than the 175 points I got with my GF2 ).
I probably should go uninstall my GF drivers now, and download some new ATI ones

nice, what do you get in 3DMark01?

3DMark01 says I need Directx 8.1, I got 9.0. Any way to still get it to run?

That's odd.. do you have the second edition?

Yeah, I got SE. I'm browsing their site right now, I'll get it to work eventually.

Q: I installed DirectX 9 and now 3DMark2001 SE tells me that I need DirectX 8.1, what gives?
A: We have noticed this behavior and the solution is quite easy. Uninstall your 3DMark2001 SE, download the latest version (Build 330) if you don`t have it already, reboot your machine and install 3DMark2001 SE again.

I hope it works.

9632, I think that's kinda low. Maybe I should disable my virusscanner and other crap I got running in the background

erm.. yeah I think that's a little low considering I got 8800 on my 64MB 8500 (not overclocked) heh

I just reinstalled windows, now I get 3388 on 3DMark03 (50% increase ). 3DMark01 still hates me though, only 9814 there (a mighty 1% increase! )
Oh well, I couldn't care less what I score anyway, all my games look great and my framerates are higher than ever

Congrats on the new card.
Your right on that 3DMark01 score, it is kinda low, I get almost 12k with my GF4 Ti4800se. But if you get good framerates and your games run good, whats the problem? heh

Your CPU may be the bottleneck now. That's why your 3DMark01 didn't increase that much. But if you're satisfied with the frames you're getting, I sure wouldn't worry about it.

If your going for a new video card, save up and get the Radeon 9700 PRO. Its one of the best cards (it was the best for a couple months at least), ATI is currently owning in the video card industry, it seems.
Though there are driver issues, 3rd party drivers are available.
I use a 128 meg version of the Radeon 8500LE. It works pretty good, I get a good 40 fps at high detail in games, at low detail I'm always around 100. (640x480).
At 1024X768 (pretty much standard resolution, I run my desktop higher though) always grabs around 80FPS on 16 bit, 60-70 on 32-bit. If you dont have alot of money get an 8500LE. If you DO, get the 9700PRO.
