win98 explorer problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

win 98 SE: athlon 1.0g processor, 20g HD.

win explorer has become unusable. when i try to open win explorer or internet explorer(v6), an error message is generated and endlessly cycles a request to send an error log to microsoft. nor can i access control panel. i have tried using system tools utility to no avail. i tried reloading win 98 se, again with no change.

any insights?

what is the error message your computer is generating? that may help narrow it down a bit. i can't remember if 98 has a system restore feature like ME or XP, but if it does, that would be worth a shot.

did you do a complete format of your hard drive before reloading windows? if you did not, that is probably what it will take to resolve your issue, unless 98 has a system restore feature, or if you error code is officially addressed on Microsoft's site. if you have not already formatted your hard drive, make sure you try to back up any files that you feel you must keep before doing a complete format.

i surrendered to the problem this morning and reformatted my hard drive as you thought i might need to do. this has taken care of the problem.

by the way the error message was unspecific, but i believe the problem arose from corrupted dll files.

many thanks for your advice.
