Wireless gaming - any worries?

I currently have a phoneline network at home but I wan't to move to wireless. I'm thinking of going with the D-link 802.11a router. I wanted to know if anyone has heard of any problems (in general ) with gaming on a wireless network, and specifically, with that particular router

wireless networks can be problematic from the security standpoint. you can both broadcast your data and receive other peoples, so make sure you configure it properly to secure your data.

Didnt someone from OTS go driving around a city or something and got onto wireless networks without being detected or having to login?

heh, thats common enough on the web, but tecil posted that here.

I have wireless at home, and did the setup at work.

It is easy to setup, but the problem comes with security. If you don't want someone browsing your network or stealing your bandwidth you need to get a router that supports 128bit encryption by secure keys. But now a days even the keys can be cracked. Low end access points will work, but are more liable to be cracked in the long run. There is software out there that will change the keys on the access points and your pc every few minutes or seconds.

As for gaming over wireless it does work, but for Lan gaming remember you'll be running at around 11MB which is roughly the same speed as the old 10baseT. While that is playable, on some titles it will cause some lag.

There are quite a few people out there running wireless for home networks, Like I posted before I found a few that I had no problem logging into, just using a laptop, wireless nic, and a Wi-Fi network scanner.

Security is top priority.

Yeah, the router I'm looking at has 152-bit WEP with dynamic keying. I'll also be using zonealarm.

But as far as latency and packet loss issues, do these tend to be more problematic with wireless? I don't want to setup a new network and find that I can't play my UT

Like I said if you've ever played on a 10baseT network thats what you'r looking at speedwise.

We've played D2, Quake, Doom2 Legacy, Counter-Strike, & BF1942 games on it and all have ran fine.

I keep getting lag issues with my wireless router and adapter card network. Every few minutes i lose packets for a few seconds and then it catches up quickly. Any ideas? I run xp and alinksys router

How far apart is your wireless device from the access point?

The problem was fixed by running a batch file to disable wzc:

@echo off
net start WZCSVC
@echo on

Apparently this service runs every couple minutes to see if a better connection exists - unfortunately it ties up my machine for a few seconds.

I'd love to hear a better way to solve this problem. Right now I'm running the batch file after everything is connected. And I made a batch file to restart wzc.

I'm not sure on the Linksys, but there should be some way to disable that in the settings. Use your browser to open up the webadmin panel on the access point and check through the settings and see.

I have a high end Compaq WL400, and can get a couple blocks away and still have a great connection.

Right now I am using a 80211b wireless net work but have not tried it out with games but as for what I have done on it already it is fine. But when considering a wireless network you need to know a few thing 80211a is a fast network but it does not have much range, 80211b has good range but not as fast as 80211a, and 80211g (my fav. and the one i will be changing to soon) has good range like 80211b and good speed like 80211a + 80211g can work with both 80211a and 80211b. If you need more info look on the net. But to make my opin. clear if your going to game you most likely want 80211a or 80211g because they have the largest band with.

if you are going to invest in wireless networking then i'd recommend you get 802.11g based access point and wireless NICs
