This guide is for those who are having problems with Diablo 2 in LAN games. If you haven't already, I suggest you try Blizzards fixes first. Then, if it still acts up, give the rest of this guide a read.
<font color="#FFFFFF"><b>Fix 1 - Change to Static IP's</b></font>
* Fix for all platforms
You have to specify IP addesses in your network properties. If you are using DHCP resolution, you need to change that. For some reason Diablo2 just does not work well with it.
Setting the IP address.
Are you behind a proxy server/gateway server on your home LAN?
NO:
- Right click Network Neighborhood.
- Select TCP/IP -> (the network adapter for the computer)
- Select Properties
- Specify an ip address of 192.168.0.1
- Specify an subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
- Now for the next computer in your chain make the ip address 192.168.0.2, same subnet of 255.255.255.0. The next computer 192.168.0.3 and so on.
- Reboot all computers, the problem should hopefully be fixed.
YES:
- Check the IP address on your server/gateway.
- Right click Network Neighborhood.
- Select TCP/IP -> (the network adapter for the computer)
- Select Properties
- Write down the IP address. Make sure the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
- Now go back to the clinet machine(s). Do the same as above.
For your IP address, it should the next in series. For example, if your server was 192.168.0.1, make your computer 192.168.0.2. Make the next computer 192.168.0.3, next computer 192.168.0.4 and so on. Set all the subnet masks to 255.255.255.0
- Check your Gateway. It should have the IP address of the server listed.
Ok. That should do it. Reboot and see if that solves your Diablo2 LAN problems. If not, you may need to tweak the network more.
<font color="#FFFFFF"><b> Fix 2 - Assign more Memory to Network Card</b></font>
* Windows 95,98,Me Fix for the Host computer in the LAN.
A brand new way of fixing the problem has surfaced and seems to work for several people that cannot change their DHCP settings.
You can reserve memory (RAM) for any given IRQ. And by increasing the default value of Ram for your network card, you may be increasing its throughput and performance.
- Right-click on 'My Computer'
- Select Properties
- On the Device Manager tab, press the Properties button (when 'Computer' is selected).
- Note which IRQ your network card is using.
- Next, open up SYSEDIT.EXE (using the Run command in your Start Menu) and edit the SYSTEM.INI file. (Windows Me users will have to edit the system.ini with notepad)
- Under the [386enh] section, add: IrqX=4096 (where 'X' is your network card's IRQ). This will reserve 4mb of ram for the network card. If you have heaps of Ram (128mb or more), you could try assigning more ram (1024 x the number of mb's you want to assign).
Note: Novice users may want to backup the system.ini file before making changes just to be safe.
- Save, reboot, then try the Lan out.
