System
MB asus k7m (bios AMIBIOS 11/01/99) bios utility V.1.17
CPU thunderbird 900 (upgrade) previously 450 athlon
RAM 384 (two diff chips - 128 and 256)
HD wd120JB (X2) (previously 2 - wd 40G)
Graphics 3D force 2MX - 32
windows 2000 (prev. 98SE)
current state
I have stripped the computer of all other parts until i finish the upgrade.
This comp. will predominantly be used for basic office use with a bit of photoshop 6.0 as well. No intense gaming.
I have upgraded due to speed and space restrictiions. the computer was working fine before upgrade.
The problem
Format HD with win 2000 setup.
The BIOS upon initial load will only recognize 800mhz processor and 181mhz of ram. Unless i stop the load and enter the bios utility at which the ram will then say 394.
sys info in windows does recognize 906mhz cpu.
Upon doing a bit of reading i felt i would need to flash the bios to recognize the new 906.
Well upon downloading from asus the flashk7m.exe file, they recc to boot from floppy into dos to perform this function. I'm new to win 2000 and cannot find any way to just go into old school dos without going thru the artificial command prompt.
since that's all i had i used it and opened the asus utility there. upon opening i recieved three diff statements.
1. "The chipset isn't supported. Add-in a proper module or assign one."
to continue hit any key
2. "The flash part isn't supported. Add-in a proper module or assign one"
to continue hit any key
3. "Please also make sure that the BIOS isn't write protected"
The utility is very different from the one shown on the web site.
At this point I have NO clue where to proceed next. I have very limited knowledge of the finer points in the software/hardware environment. I have emailed asus with no response after 7days. Is this a case of too much for the old MB. If i purchased a later model of MB would it support these upgardes better. the k7m suports up to 1G cpu so i'm just a bit lost.
thanks in advance

If the flash utility doesn't have a boot disk maker, then get a Windows 98 bootdisk maker from www.bootdisk.com and make a bootdisk.
Then copy the flash utility to a disk (You can use the same disk if you have enough space on it) then boot from the bootdisk, and run the flash utility.
