Windows Me Unable to Load after restoring to IE 5.5 from IE 6.0, corrupt startup file

I installed IE 6.0 on my WINME system the other day and decided to switch back to IE5.5 after I found out ie6.0 can't save pictures properly in .art format. I used Add/Remove from the control panel, first to repair IE6.0 but when I found out that didn't solve the problem, I used Add/Remove to restore to the IE5.5. However, when I restarted the computer after this process I received an error message twice, which I didn't write down to my own dismay and clicked 'OK'. No it was not ok from there because Windows refused to load any programs. I tried to use System restore while in Save mode, but that didn't work. Then I used my Bootup disk to load Windows and did scan disk and Registry restore afterwards. Both of which again failed. I'm almost at the end of my rope before another clean install on this PC, but unlike last time, I didn't backup my files and I can't run my burner unless Windows start. So far I read about corrupted startup files and SFC, but I can't run SFC and I'm not so sure I should install WINME in a folder other than C:\WINDOWS to recover files. Please help because I don't want to lose work again. Thanks in advance.
