ddram or rdram

im building a new computer and i was wondering which is better ddram or rdram. The computer will be mostly used for gaming.

It will utimately depend on what kind of CPU and motherboard you're planning to get. Your board will either support DDR or RDRAM. If even after that you have the option of choosing either one, then you'll need to consider the following:

DDR RAM: Cheaper, lower BUS Speeds (266, 333, or 400), and generally found on most boards
RDRAM: More expensive, needs to be bought in pairs (not always), higher speeds (800 and 1066), and (I think) is supported by less boards

When deciding what speed RAM you want, you need to also consider the speed of your motherboard's chipset. If it only supports up to 333, then you would be wasting your money if you buy a 400. If it only supports 800, you would not be getting a 1066.

IMHO, DDR RAM is a lot more cost-efficient. The higher RAM BUS speeds really does not significantly affect your PC's performance enough to merit the cost of RDRAM.

Nowadays there is little to no performance difference between the two, so your best bet is to just find a good 845PE board if you are going intel, and go DDR. Saves you money.

im going to get a P4 2.4
right now i am in desicion of these two mobos.

unfortunately, intel chipsets are lagging in the ddr department. the 845 doesnt support the newer speeds of ddr. although with a 2.4, 845 would probably do nicely for you.

Not really true, the performance difference between 1066rdram and 333ddr on the PE chipset is negligible at best, and with the granitebay chipset that's out soon, the dual channel DDR gives 333mhz ddr ram more bandwidth than the processor can actually use.

supposedly
as i was wandering in the depths of ddr today, other chipsets that do support ddr400 do better with the 400 than the 333, despite the supposed limitation of the fsb. would probably only make a difference if youre using a hyperthreading chip.
