more D2 problems

as with many other users, i have a D3D problem. My suggested video mode is "Direct3D NVIDIA GeForce 256 (Micron)". But whenever i use this mode, all these funky colors appear on the game when i run it. the game can still be played, though it is impossible to tell where you, items, monsters, etc are. This can be solved by using "DirectDraw (2D): NVIDIA GeForce 256 (Micron)", but i would rather use D3D.
But the big problem right now is whenever i play D2, it constantly minimizes every 30 seconds or so. Ill just reclick it on the taskbar at the bottom and itll reopen, later to minimize in another 30 seconds.
GenuineIntel pIII 733mhz
x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 1
128 MB RAM
27 G HD
NVIDIA GeForce 256 (Micron)
Aureal Vortex sound card
DirectX 9.0a (I think, just got the newest)

also, sometimes in between minimizings, a blue windows error screen will appear and the game will shut down, this often happens too

download and install the latest video drivers from the nvidia site.

have done, and it fixed the D3D color problem. But the big minimizing problem is still here, and now after I reopen it from the taskbar, it often closes.

also, the problem is characterized by the D2 pointer temporarily turning into the normal white windows arrow with the hourglass for a second then back to the D2 cursor. This means the minimization is going to happen within 5 seconds. Maybe this is because some wierd program keeps loading every so often and it minimizes all open games or something. Just something to think about

I know about the problem you are describing. If your pointer is returning to the standard windows pointer, something is crashing in the background or stealing your focus from D2 (most likely crashing, given your description). I would take a look at what programs you are running in the background and start cataloguing what each one is and what it does. Eliminating unnecessary processes might be a good idea. At any rate, these steps will help you isolate what is causing the problem. Good luck.

have done, and at first i thought is was ramidle freeing up ram causing it to minimize, but after closing everything but systray, explorer, and D2 the problem still happens . Maybe its someother background task that is part of systray or explorer functions?

Does it minimize when you run it in DirectDraw too? D2's Direct3D is kinda buggy, alot of people (me included) just run it DirectDraw instead.

? to darkvision, and yes i am running it in directdraw, it seems to run much faster and smoother, although it still minimizes in the same exact way

well, currently the problem is fixed. I crtlaltdlt and rgv3305 and rem32b4 are both open. Any ideas on if this is the solution and how to keep it that way? I guess i can just never turn off the computer ;p

Go to Start > Run.
Type msconfig
Choose the "Startup" tab.
If there is anything that you don't recognize set to start on boot (it will have a checkmark next to it if it is set to start on boot), then uncheck it.
I did a quick websearch and whatever is opening the processes rem32b4 and rgv3305 doesn't seem to be a standard program. Have you downloaded any hacks (including maphack), cheats, or other "enhancements?" If so, I'd suggest running a virus scan.
Hell, I'd suggest running a thorough virus scan anyway. You never know.

yes i have already done that msconfig, and no i havent downloaded any hacks. D2 has stopped saving my game tho, so ill just reinstall it and hope for the best

I doubt that will fix anything, maybe just the save game problem.
Do a virus scan, soon.
