SBC Yahoo DSL

Okay, so without a bit of networking knowledge and a ton of patience, I never, ever would have gotten my SBC Yahoo DSL up and running with our Linksys router.
First problem? Absolutely no documentation. You are required to install their software, which also installs some spyware, hijacks your browser, changes many settings, adds unnecessary programs, and puts 5 new icons on your desktop without asking you if any of this is ok.
Next, the required registration software is buggy. I had to reinstall it three times. The first time, it threw script errors at me when I tried to register. The second time, it couldn't find its own built-in server connection. The third time, it worked. Installation took almost 20 minutes each time. It installs 125 MB of crap on your computer.
Finally I got to the point where I could figure out what the IP address it was assigning me was and the DNS servers. I used those to configure my router settings. SBC Yahoo could *not* automatically configure it for me like Charter Pipeline did. I could ping, I could use nslookup, but I couldn't use an internet browser.
I had to figure out that I had to switch my router to use PPPoE. Customer support didn't tell me that, the "help software" didn't tell me that.. I only figured it out by catching the "attempting connection" screen flash by, where I saw the phrase "Attempting to create PPPoE Connection."
At any rate, this was a pain in the ass. After Angst punched through all the options on the phone support menu, he spent 15 minutes on hold. The customer support was having trouble with their phones, and we were on a poor connection. The phone operator yelled for me to "HANG UP AND CALL BACK ON A REAL PHONE" and then hung up on me.
If we ever lose power to the DSL modem, I'll apparently have to disconnect the network, plug my computer directly into the DSL, and go through the authentication process again to get a new IP address.
So far, piss-poor experience. But then again, I've had a really crappy day, and didn't expect to spend over 2 hours setting up our network.
But hey, I'm back online.

I know just about all the in's and out's for SBC Yahoo DSL, Ive had it since last September. If you need help, I can probably get you going. Ive got mine setup on a Linksys BESFR41 v.2 router that goes to this PC, my PS2 and sometimes a laptop and another desktop(they arent always connected). When I first got SBC, I didnt want all that Yahoo crap, cuz the program sucked and so did the browser. So until I got a router, I just disabled all the other Yahoo stuff and used the Enternet 300 software and had it load and autoconnect on startup. After I got the router, I simply put in the linksys disc that came with it and followed the instructions, it did everything for me.
Most important question: What modem did you get? Some of them are incompatable with the Linksys router and need their firmware updated.
Also, the SBC/Pacbell forum at dslreports.com is the official tech support forum for SBC Yahoo DSL, they have 2 or 3 techs that man the boards, nice guys and they get things fixed fast. I got my line uncapped about a week early from one of them, and hes also calling me tomorrow to connect me with the retension department to get my montly fee lowered, hopefully.
Posted by: Shalome
Hook me up with that guy. I want to be uncapped. A lower fee would be good, too.
Oh, and we have a Linksys BESFR41 too, with two PCs.. I got it configured without the Linksys disk. As soon as I got authenticated with a direct PC-to-DSL oonnection, I just did an ipconfig and checked the IP address they assigned and the primary and secondary DNS servers, then plugged that into the router through the admin interface.

If your in a new house, you cant get uncapped til the 10 day period is over(or near the end). The only reason he could uncap me is because I had DSL on this line before, so there was no need to check the limits again. As for the fee getting lowered, well Im crossing my fingers on that one. Im on the Deluxe plan, which is 768-1500/256(I get 1238/246 ) and the other day I was checking out their rates and Im paying way too much. I have to pay $59.99 a month and Im on a 1 year contract, but the website has their rates listed as $44.95 a month for a yearly contract and $59.99 a month for month to month. I stated on the forums that I thought that was very unfair, so one of the techs is gonna see what he can do. My only disadvantage is that I cant threaten to cancel, because if I canceled now, it would cost me something like $400 because of the early cancelation fees. But he thinks I have a good chance of getting a lower fee. Will make me a lot happier tomorrow after the POS day Ive had today.
What state are you in?

My first experience with SBC Yahoo Live Tech Support Chat:
Yana: Hello j.starks, How can we assist you today?
j.starks: I just got SBC Yahoo DSL. Since I installed the SBC Yahoo software, most internet sites only display red Xs instead of pictures.
Yana: Okay.
j.starks: I've reinstalled Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, updated my video card drivers, and made sure I had "show images" enabled in IE's options.
Yana: Please let me know, the browser you are using to visit different web sites. (Internet Explorer, Netscape, or SBC Yahoo! Browser).
j.starks: Internet Explorer 6.0.
Yana: Okay.
Yana: I appreciate your knowledge and effort.
Yana: I apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.
(long pause)
j.starks: Are you a bot or a real person?
Yana: Like you.
Yana: I am real person.
j.starks: Heh. Good.
Yana: I suggest that you delete the files and Cookies.
Yana: You may experience this issue, due temporary Internet files and Cookies that gets accumulated with your browser.
j.starks: I've cleared my cache, deleted all temporary internet files and deleted my cookies. I have also run a ScanDisk and defragmented my drive. Then I re-downloaded and reinstalled IE 6 from Microsoft.
j.starks: Any other suggestions?
Yana: That's great!
Yana: Mr. Jason, it seems that some of important file required in Internet Explorer have gone corrupted, due to which you are experiencing.
Yana: Mr. Jason, it seems that some of important file required in Internet Explorer have gone corrupted, due to which you are experiencing this issue.
j.starks: Okay. I just re-downloaded Internet Explorer 6.0 from Microsoft.com and re-installed it. This did not fix the problem.
Yana: Oh!
Yana: I regret the inconvenience this has caused.
Yana: Please contact our Technical Support Engineers to get this issue discussed in detail.
Yana: They will guide with the complete trouble shooting required.
j.starks: How do I contact tech support?
Yana: You can reach them at 1-877-SBC-DSL5.
Yana: I apologize for not being able to assist you in this matter.
Yana: They will be pleased to offer assistance to you further.
j.starks: Okay. Thank you.

Went to sbc.yahoo.com, logged in, clicked around support options.

In case anyone else has this problem, I found the solution:
I killed the SBC Yahoo Connection Manager. The one the techs said I absolutely, fundamentally needed in order to "authenticate with the SBC servers."
I can connect just fine. Faster, in fact. Everything on the internet loads faster. IE works just as well as Netscape. I don't have a problem with Java-based programs going all wonky anymore. I boot a heck of a lot quicker. I don't get annoying little popup "reminders" of stuff I didn't need to know about from SBC Yahoo anymore.
It's excellent.
Did I mention that the SBC techs told me I absolutely positively NEEDED the Connection Manager software?
Posted by: SKYHN
They say that cuz of their little deal with yahoo. If you dont use it, you dont see "YAHOO!" plastered all over. All that thing does is open the enternet program, which connects you. Its really just a pretty connection manager that causes more trouble than its worth.
I just put enternet in my startup until I got a router. Now I just connect with that.

I am also a user of sbc dsl, and would discourage anyone from using their services if at all avoidable. currently sbc offers the only service in my area so I have to stick with them, but as soon as comcast comes online, they will have my buisness. I suggest you give them yours too.

I just bought the Linksys WRT54G wireless router and hooked it up to the modem that SBC Yahoo DSL gave me. I am able to access the internet from both of my pc's (one laptop and one desktop) but both will suddenly stop working after about 20 minutes. Plus if i turn the desktop on while the lap top is accessing the internet both connections are dropped. Any help?
Posted by: SKYHN
I just renewed my contract for 1500/256 @ $39.99 a month. w00t
As for that wireless router, make sure the firmware is updated. Also, these forums are very helpful with SBC problems(people from SBC actually are on these forums):
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,pcb
Posted by: arturo238
In response to Mr. Madman...
Surething, that problem is usually caused by the DSL modem, but sometimes the router as well. The best solution is to simply reboot both devices by switching them off for about 30 second then turning on the modem first. After the modem powers up and establishes a connection, flip on the router. This should help a lot. If not let me know, and maybe I can find another solution.

I would not recommend to use SBC software at all.
Instead I would strongly recommend to use a separate router
DSL installation with PPPoE
what would give you a more reliable and secure solution.

What modems are they issuing with SBC/Yahoo? Are they setting them up as bridges, or are they PPPOE enabled? In the case of the former, then the router would definitely have to be set up for PPPOE authentication, receiving the dynamic IP, etc. In the case of the latter, then the router would need to be set for receiving DHCP or for whatever IP the modem is giving out, if it is not a DHCP server. If you are getting a dynamic IP, once you have your user name and password set up, you should not have to use any other connection program junk, unless they monitor it somehow. For $60 a month, I'd hope not.
A little trick that might help: Connect to the modem and to the Linksys routers, seprately, and on each renew your IP, do ipconfig, and see what their addresses are. If the DSL modem is a Zyxel 6 series, you will probably get an address of 192.168.1.1 for both the router and the modem. If so, you might want to go into the Linksys and change it's address to 192.168.0.1 or such. (don't forget to renew your machines' IP's afterwards) This way, you can access them independently from one of your networked computers without having to plug straight in to the modem.
Let me know what modem you have, and if you are assigned a static address, or a user name, etc., and I may be able to help you bypass all of the junk that it sounds like they want you to use, especially if it is a Zyxel 645 modem. I install DSL for Sprint, and we have a very simple config: Phone jack to 645 modem, PPPOE or static IP set up in modem, x-over cable to nic. No additional software added, period. In the case of a network, add the router in between the x-over and the PC, change IP of the router, and you are as good as gold, and again, ZERO software, adware, etc. added.
Posted by: redwench
ahah, a sprint person. explain why dsl that was supposed to be here a year ago is not only missing, but apparently no longer even on the schedule.
Posted by: jet66
I wish I knew... I've seen the same thing here in FL. We had a roll-out schedule for almost every remote in my area, and poof, it is now gone, and no one will tell me anything concrete. I would guess that it is a matter of cost, but the demand is so high that I think they would be in the black much faster than they realize. One area I work in, they set it up for a capability of 36 DSLs. That shelf filled up in 20 days, and the second shelf they installed filled up in less than that, due to the number of orders on hold. That system right now has capability of approx. 300 DSL's (out of a system with the potential for about 1250 voice lines) and they are about at 80% capacity, with a brand new subdivision about to open up. We have other areas that I know would have similar results (which equals big revenues vs. the initial investment) but they still won't commit to time frames. It is almost as frustrating to me as it is to you.
You would think that they would at least tell the techs that work on it something definite, but nooo... We are always the last to know everything. I had to find out that they reset our test account passwords by calling tech support to find out why I couldn't sync and surf.
Posted by: SKYHN
Sprint has been calling me for over a year telling me their DSL is coming and its better than SBCs. Dont really understand how thats possible since its running on the same line. Ive told that guy to stop calling me, but he seems to not understand that somehow.
Posted by: chaosisreality
They stopped calling me after a few choice words.
Posted by: jet66
It could only be better if they offer faster speeds, I'd guess. I know some places get something like a 384k max down, where we go from 512k to 3meg, depending how close you are to the DSLAM. But, we have no actual local competition, aside from CLECS, who basically just resell our dial tone service under their own name. Is your local phone company actually SBC or Sprint? If it is SBC, I'd be curious as to how Sprint is going to provide DSL, other than reselling. Unless you are in a major metro market. That makes it all more complicated, as far as competition and telco hardware goes.
At any rate, I feel your pain when it comes to sales people. They'll promise you everything, even if you can't realistically have it. I get to break people's hearts every day...
Posted by: SKYHN
My phone company is SBC, but I have longdistance with sprint. SBC, Earthlink and Aol+ are the only broadband in my area.
Posted by: jet66
Ah, then you are most likely better off sticking with SBC's DSL anyways. As far as I know, unless Sprint has their own DSLAM in SBC's central office, they can't give you anything more than what you are getting now, speed-wise. Here, Sprint DSL comes packaged with Earthlink ISP, no other options.
I'm all about selling our services, but I would never recommend them if they are not going to give the user an advantage.
Posted by: SKYHN
Im on a 1 year contract anyways, if a company has a cheaper per month price and they want me to switch, im all for it. As long as they pay the early contract termination fee and dont interrupt my service, which is impossible
Posted by: jet66
And if they are willing to whisk you away with a better price and eating your early termination fee, then you see if SBC will offer to beat their deal. Competition CAN be a beautiful thing... Just don't tell them about the not-interrupting-your-service part. Then SBC will know they've got their hooks in you. Waffling is the best way to get the sweetest deal. heh heh...
Posted by: SKYHN
I dont have any desire to change at all really. Im paying $39.99 for 1500/256(1307/246 actual). All upload speeds are being increased this month(On my plan, to 384) and SBC is currently testing lines for 2.5 and 3mb download to compete more with cable. So far things are looking good.

How to uninstall Connection Manager
Click “Start”, “Programs”, “SBC Yahoo! DSL”, “Uninstall SBC Yahoo! Applications”, Click “Next”, Check box for “Connection Manager”, follow instruction to uninstall.
After this is done go to “Start”, “Programs”, “Efficient Networks”, “EnterNet 300”, “EnterNet 300”, when the window opens up left click and hold on the Icon on the right that says ‘DSL Connection” and drag it onto the Desk top and release.
From now on you will double click on this Icon to launch your DSL, check the box that says “save password” and then click “Connect”

here's how to uninstall DSL Yahoo from your system if you are still using
installation Kit V 4.0 or lower
------ To properly uninstall DSL yahoo you must follow a certain step or heirarchy of uninstallation procedure......do this in the add/remove programs in the windows control panel... also you may not restart not until you uninstall enternet300....here it is.....
For Non-XP (win95B, win98,win98SE, 2k, NT 4.0 SP6)
1. SBC Yahoo Internet Mail
2. SBC Yahoo Messenger
3. SBC Yahoo Parental Control
4. Yahoo Companion
5. Yahoo Log-in
6. Yahoo Messenger Explorer Bar
7. SBC Yahoo Dial (remove only)
8. SBC Yahoo Utils
9. SBC Yahoo DSL
10. EnterNet 300
---- take note: reboot required after uninstallation of enternet300,
also, this should also uninstall broad dump correct connection
engine
11. Broad Dump Client Foundation
For XP
1. same as steps 1-6 above
2. SBC Dial
3. SBC Connection Manager
If you have the uninstalltion manager your lucky... because with the uninstallation manager you'll be able to select which you want to uninstall as mentioned below in one of the postings.....
Posted by: wanoy
about logging in using EnterNet300...
the enterNet300 contains the PPPoE profile that the system uses....
I havent tried using that to login though.....
Posted by: SKYHN
You just put a shortcut to enternet300 into your startup folder and it will automatically connect you when windows starts.

I keep reading how you guys all seem to have issues with Yahoo DSL. I agree that they have 180mb of crap on their cds, but why would you even install it? You can use XP to make a new connection without going through that whole process and instead of taking 20 minutes it takes like 2. If you don't know how, call SBC Yahoo and they will walk you through the process.
Originally, I had AOL as a dial-up isp before I made the switch to broadband. My first mistake was picking cable. Everyone said it was faster, but they failed to mention that the hours I use the computer (late at night) everyone is on and the connection slows way down, sometimes to 256. I had Comcast frist, then Tele-Media. Besides those issues, they both were constantly upgrading lines or whatever and I actually had periods where I couldn't surf for days.
Enter Yahoo DSL. Originally SBC told me I had to wait for 10 months into my regular phone service before I could get it. Something about establishing good customer credit. I managed to convince them to send it sooner as I was going to go with a competitor of theirs if they didn't. I pay forthe 2nd highest home package which gets me something like 1400 down (according to Toast.net), and like 700+ up for $59 a month. I also get a $20 discount a month for my phone package, so it works out well.
In almost a year of service, I have only had to contact them like 3 times and that was because they did line maintainence at odd hours and I had no idea. All in all, they are the best, and for those of you who use IRC like me to get movies or music, SBC is the only ISP in America that will not turn over user names and ips.
---Coincidentallly, I highly recommend the new AMD 64-bit processor, and using sp2 on XP or even using Longhorn. I no longer have a bench computer, so I am sticking with XP for now, but longhorn looks to be awesome. Oh, definately get Office 2003. It is so much better than the rest.

Hello everyone,
I have had a cable modem through cox for a while now, thinking about switching to sbc-yahoo DSL.
I tried a modem test at cnet:
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
It said I am getting 1389.2 kbps at 11:52 AM (central time) today.
I have ran the test at different times, have not got less than a 900 kbps.
Cox charges me $60.00 with modem rental.
I've read a bit about yahoo dsl being a pain to setup.
My computer:
Emachines T1116
1.1GHz Intel Celeron
256mb SyncDram
10/100 Mbps Built-in Ethernet
40 GB Hard Drive
Anyone with dsl think it would be worth switching?
Would I save any money?
Thanks for any info.
Posted by: teikyo30
As I said above, yahoo dsl is easy to set up. The hardware you just connect and run the driver programs. The connection you go through XP and make a new connection with your user name and password. It's that simple. Don't pay attention to anyone who tells you otherwise.
Posted by: Shalome
It may be simple if you are using one computer plugged directly into the DSL modem.
If you're on a home network with a router, things get more complicated.
Sorry, teikyo30, but it's true. SBC Yahoo DSL support is awful, and their service isn't that great.
I've got Charter cable right now. It's blindingly fast and stable, and their support techs have been bend-over-backwards helpful the two times we had problems that were out of our control. I'd highly recommend it.
Posted by: teikyo30
I would never go with cable over dsl unless they could give me a guarantee in writing that no matter what my connection speed would never drop due to volume of users, and from what I understand about cable, that isn't a promise they can make
As to your issues with a home network, I haven't tried this yet, but I would imagine if you use a wireless network, it shouldn't be all that difficult to set up. Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but then I don't have a second computer. I'm not sure exactly if you have to set up the internet connection on the second computer or if it just works off the connection it has to the gateway, but even if you do have to set up the internet on the 2nd computer, can't you just copy the settings from the first?
The main reason I use Yahoo, besides the great service I've received, is because I use IRC a lot and I like that Yahoo doesn't turn over user names to groups like the RIAA.
Posted by: SKYHN
Dont ever use SBC Phone support, use the SBC forums at DSLReports.com, the 3 guys there can do more for you than waiting on the phone for 3 hours. SBC is about to outsource their tier 1 tech support to india too, so most likely soon you will be getting someone who doesnt speak english very well(or their accent is too heavy to understand them). I remember when a friend of mine called Dell tech once to get a hard drive replacement, we had to call 4 times til we got someone we could understand.
If you were to get SBC, since your paying $60 now, get the Expert Plus package(If you qualify). They jsut recently extended the service range for it to 9500 feet. Its $44.95 a month(+$3.xx FUSF Fee) on a one year contract and the modem is free. Its advertised speed is 1500-3000/384 but its actually 6000/608. They didnt make a new 3000 speed profile for it, they just put everyone on 6000.
Here is what speeds I get with expert plus(Im 5600ft away):

It's really quite simple running a router with SBC
Normally, when you're running a router they would refer you over to the manufacturer.
Here's what you need to get from the SBC DSL technical support:
1. determine if you're subscribed into a static or dynamic IP subscription
2. determine if you're on PPPoE
3. confirm if you're using the correct email address which they call the userid, and the password.
Usually, a subscriber will be on a Dynamic IP, uses the username & password to authenticate into the system
When you're running a network.. usually running the workstation in "auto-obtain" IP address will do.
_________
And yes, you can do away with the SBC software package if you're running XP because XP has a built in PPPoE engine on it.
If you're running lower OS like win9x, win2k, NT4, WinMe you will certainly need a PPPoE software which the cd has.
Correct me if I'm wrong....
What is bundled in the SBC package is the program called enternet300. This software is what you need to connect.
Just create the right profile in the enternet300 and connect.
That simple.
here's how to find it in the cd (version 4.0):
SBC DSL CD> setup folder> efficient>NoReboot>set.exe
Posted by: wanoy
the second part about the enternet 300 is for single pc trying to connect to the SBC DSL
Posted by: wanoy
SBC also came up with a modem that has a PPPoE firmware in it.
It is what they call Speedstream 5100b.
how wud you know you have 1?
simply look at the modem and try to look for the internet light.
5 lights in all... power, DSL, enet, internet and act
if you dont have it? chances are, you'll be needing the enternet300 program if you're not running XP.
______
other SBC provided modem that has the PPPoE firmware in them...
2wire also has a PPPoE firmware in it and could function as a router.... and cayman netopia of course.....

Hi,,,, How do you kill the Connection Manager? I have WinXP, and just got SBC/DSL last week. Everything was fine till I installed all the junk. I have 4 PC's hooked thru Linksys BEFW1154 Wireless Access Point Router. No java trubble on ANY of the other PC's. The main PC is XP. the second WinME, 3rd 98SE, and 4th XP laptop (wireless). I get the X's on ANY part of Yahoo! and few other sites. This site, loads fine, I see every picture! This is so frustrating!
Can you help?
Thanks soooooooo much

OhYeah!, I forgot probably the most important thing. Because I wanted wireless DSL in my home, they sent me a Equipment than what I've been reading about here. My hardware is the 2WIRE 1000 SO, I don't think that alot of what I'm reading will help much, but I tell you......some of it does. Thanks in Advance

Tell me, should I do this also...here is my current problem: When accessing email an error message occurs that says "javascript is disabled, would you like to switch back to the old version?" A link is provided to correct internet settings to enable java - but my settings are already AOK to allow for it. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

Today is the day my sbc yahoo was supposed to be activated, and the cd couldn't make a handshake with sbc; tech say their database is down.Nice start! Now i have time to do the install without the cd-everyone says beware of the CD. So I'm not clear about whether I should do the speedstream 5100 and the linksys wrt54g router all at the same time. I use win 98se and I think the connection wizard should be ok, and i would love to not see yahoo stuff everywhere-already had to unhijack my start page.
Read lots of stuff, but need clarity on the process. Should i hook up the router and set the ppoe stuff before i go to the sbc page 192.68, ect.?

How do I configure my pppoe for SBC DSL? I have windows XE.
Posted by: pushbuttonandgo
Replying to myself and all: Sorry about the newbie post. Just so everyone knows, I learned a few things in logging on and subscribing to sbc. 1. you dont need the cd, but I notice that sbc installer ver 5.01-ACSX had checkboxes to opt out of many of their programs- but beware its first order of business was to hijack your browser home page, and put an adware program on your system. New speedstream 5100 was easy to configure and is your 1st stop on the no cd registration road, go to http://www.obviously.com/tech_tips/...etup_no_CD.html Next stop was to hook up a wireless router- i used the Linksys ...54 and though it has some spotty reviews, it works just fine- leave everything the same on the speedstream, and to my surprise stay with the default, Automatic configuration on the Linksys. So far so good. Before youstart this oddessy, you ethernet card has to work and be able to go to the speedstream web page which is generated by the little black box-just go to its sddress192.168.0.1

I feel sorry for you guys for having to deal with SBC dsl, I have had Bellsouth for nearly a year now and hope to upgrade to the new 3.0 Mbps dsl, not sure on the upload speed though, i think its 768 or something. Unfathomable, how $60/month will get me twice T1 speeds. lol

Well, I have had my piece of crappy cake from SBC now. I have been a customer of SBC (with 1 static ip) for about 4 years (since dsl came to my location here in mountain view, california). I recently moved to san jose,ca and my god sbc has made it so f@#%ing difficult for people to set up dsl. I just had their flavor of crap, and tired with them. Already 5 cases in 2 days (It;s been only couple days since the service was activated). Nobody even told that they have this crappy pppoe service. It doesn't work my linksys v-vpn broadband router. drops the connections often. And most of all their crappy, annoying programs of yahoo and sbc they install during the setup to snoop around your pc and without even asking for permission (Maybe its in their long 10 page licensing agreement). They will even tranmit your browsing habits. I hate that stuff. I'm a technical person , and have many servers such as oracle, sqlserver, iis and streaming server running and it was a big mistake to sign up for dynamic. I never thought it would be pppoe. Now I can't cancel. I called up COVAD communications, and they were willing to install DSl at my home. Many people don't know that and think SBC is the only option for DSL. Atleast in my location in San Jose, CA ther is covad. Somebody should do something about these monopoly Bas-Turds. Also they say you will be getting the highest possible speed in your selection, but in many cases you won't be even getting 30% of what they say. In my case in San Jose downtown, all you get is less than 128 up and less than 384 down. This is the case in prime downtown where all the technology companies are located. LIARS!!! Just imagine other residential locations. And for this prime location, the highest they have is 'express' (and that too crappy express). no pro, no symmetric.
I'm planning to go with static now. But they're already making it difficult for me to change the plans. They are trying to extend the current service as long as possible whether it works or not. Will see what happens.

Help!!! I just received my SBC Yahoo DSL Installation kit in the mail, and after reading all of your posts, I'm terrified. Is there any advice anyone can give me before I get started on this. I am going to try to set up a desktop and a laptop to my network.

Hi:
I work for SBC in the DSL side of the house. There are all kinds of horror stories I've heard about using the Yahoo! software and connection manager that comes with your service. Hopefully you are using XP, if you are, go into my network places and choose new network connection, or new connection wizard, or something like that. Then it will guide you thru setting up a connection. You don't even need to use the SBC software, except as a coaster for cold drinks, like I do. If you use a PPPOE router, it's even easier, but you have to use the XP connection to register, using the username and password they tell you to use to get to the registration site. Once you do that, just change the username and password to the ones you chose when you signed up and you should be golden. Good Luck.

Dont Use DSL atm , becuase cable is cheaper in my area for much higher speeds avg.
As for the dropping of computers on your network, I had a problem similar to that with my home LAN (not wireless) first problem i found was the modem, after 5 service calls a new line ran , they finally listened to me and replaced my Cable modem, fixed , well except when they reset their DHCP and my IP Address changes , stupid no-servers protection.
Other things to check , exspecialy if you are using a WAN, if you live in a nieghborhood, or apartment complex. Wireless routers can be self-"Hacked" to take all Bands, basicly the router is using up the entire ghz range for itself which can cause other wirelss networks in the area to become unstable, easy way to check is by using ethernet.
Ive only used linksys routers and they do have a log function, dunno how descriptive it is, never used it myself.
Reseting your IP Addess on each computer might speed up the re-connection, also reseting your Routers IP, I use DHCP so not a big deal for me.
On a side not, its now illegal to install Spyware, adware, or anything on someones Computer without their Consent. Wonder how this will stack, could it be another Spam law? worthless? so read the user agreement, anything installed before the option of accepting (even by accepting terms of BS) could fall under this law and you might be able to cuase problems for the Yahoo crap.
EDIT: Opps also if you are using Wireless you can try changing your channel on the router.

I had similar issues with getting dropped connections but after going to bridge mode everything seams to be fine. Now i am trying to Remote desktop into my pc from work and i am unable to, i think the problem is my speed stream 5100B. I have a netgear Mr814 wireless router with port 5900 forwarded to the PC of my choice (I changed my registry to reflect the change from port 3389 to 5900) . I have all the firewalls disabled, any suggestions?

How did you do this exactly? I'm not computer illiterate. I built my computer myself, but am new to dsl.
Win xp pro
linksys BEFSR41 router
SpeedStream 5100 modem
I cannot pull up ipconfig. It flashes and goes away. So, that route is unavailable to me and I dont see enternet anywhere and wouldn't know how you did it anyway. I tried using xp software to connect and keep getting errors. I didn't install any of the extras from the cd. Just the basic stuff.
Can you help me out?

actually the conection manager in the sbc yahoo software isn't needed to connect you at all the only thing they want you to install it for is to get there browser and the self help tool that doesn't even work
Posted by: jeepster_1975
9 times out of 10 if you are installing that software the connection well mess up the java ....you can bypass the full install to get what you want off the disc without installing that

I've been trying to install the "free" protection software that comes with SBC Yahoo DSL since last Monday without any success. I even contacted tech support via email which they replied with three possible solutions, all that did not work. I then called the New Delhi support group and explained the problem which lead to the tech causing a number of regedit errors to occur during the reload of the SBC base software. When I told him of the regedit errors, he said it was the computer manufacturer's fault and I needed to contact them directly. Needless to say, I thanked him for his help and proceeded to install back to a previous restore point.
Anyway, it seems the possibility of another virus protection program could be keeping the SBC package from loading (I get no error message when I click on "install" - the screen just blinks and does nothing). So I double check to see if there's some remnant of a NAV or Trend Micro on my system and find absolutely nothing. I even buy a registry cleaning tool (PC Tools Registry Mechanic) to get rid of all the garbage over the last 4 years. Still the same problem.
Has anyone else encountered this problem with the protection software load and if so what did you do to get it to work?
BTW, I'm a newbie to this group.

what i would suggest you call tech support again ( 1-877-SBC-DSL5 ) and ask directly for Tier 2 Tech support which they call STS. I think the antivirus software with the bundle is EZ antivirus

Ok, I've purchased a linksys WRT54GS but have been unable to get it working thus far with the 2Wire from SBC Yahoo DSL. The SBC Yahoo DSL modem works fine when plugged right into my computer. If I try running the linksys software or hookup the 2Wire to the linksys wireless router, I have no connection to the internet (my desktop computer or laptop). Anyone willing to help a newbie that does not know all the PPPOE, IP address, etc... wordings? I'd love to get my laptop going by this evening.

Hi, I have sbc yahoo dsl with a 2wire gateway modem. I recently bought a netgear wgr614v6 router so that i can connect wirelessly with my laptop. I popped in the router's cd and everything was going fine until i got to the "redirecting your network" page. when the progress bar got to about 75%, i got sent to a "page cannot be displayed." Does anybody have the same problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

i use earthlink, as my cable modem provider with brighthouse cable company here in florida
id you have a choice i would recoommend it. i know some people dont like earthlink but they are cheaper to use when you order direct from them and not through your cable provider
i pay 41.95 a month for hs cable which is $9.00 cheaper than the cable company charges for the same service and it appears on my cable bill, also if you have a choice of direct tv or cable bug your cable company for a competitive discount i had full cable channels for half price for 4 years until i moved! 2 years longer than the original contract, sorry if i went off topic just suggesting you shop direct when these services do appear in your area, roadrunner, aol and earthlink are typical cable internet choices shop them direct before ordering from your cable provider, i did the same with my home phone which is internet phone 25.00 a month unlimited calls not too shabby

Hi there im a SBC tech... i'd love to provide u with some vital information... what i understand u got a 2wire and a netgear router, just to inform u that 2wire is a router itself.... and in order to connect two routers we need to some care, if u got three green lights on the 2wire and if u r able to connect using the 2wire in that case if u connect the netgear router while running the cd for netgear make shure u have the connection type selected as " obtain an ip address automatically (dhcp) " , that should work, if u still have any problems simply reply back.......[ ****sbc tech will never suppor this kind of setup as netgear is a third party router...even though a lot of sbc tech have very gud knowledge in the field of networking we are not allowed to go beyound our scope of support*** ]

I guess I can add myself to the list of SBC DSL victims, seeing as how I've had and still am having my fair share of runaround bullshit. When the connection first kicked in, everything was fine, for roughly 2 days. Then constant disconnects followed by lengthy calls to their tech support resulted in no progress whatsoever. They told me to do a virus scan, because it was most likely my computer that was causing this. Wrong.
Spyware scans with spybot S&D and Adaware(both updated) showed nothing more than the google toolbar's last searches and a couple mostly harmless cydoor files. After that was taken care of, I used Avast! virus scanner and did a full scan of both of my hard drives. Nothing. Then I do a full scan with AVG. Nothing.
So I just grind my teeth and hope it just fades out, then we start having problems with our phone line on and off every day. They send a guy out, and everything shows up fine, the filters are all installed just fine, but suddenly the phone is working and so is the connection. A week passes, and it's still happening. The guy who came out gave me his pager # to get a hold of him the next time the phone's go on the fritz. So the next day, it goes batshit again, and I page him. He comes over and traces the wire up to the telephone pole outside my house and discovers that a cable wire was causing interference with our phone line, and fixes it. This ceases the frequent disconnects on my DSL and the static-y intereference our phones were getting.
So for the next three days after the fix, I get crystal clear connection, up/dl speeds are just fine, no disconnects whatsoever. Then the next lovely problem comes up that I'm still trying to fix: My dl stops at around 50 kb/s, ramping pings on game servers that are no more than 10 miles from here, ranging from 150-500ms and bouncing back and forth. I'm an avid gamer so this can get incredibly frustrating. I find that unplugging the power cord from my 2wire modem for one minute sets my connection free for a good 3-7 minutes, then goes back to it's crapping on self. I tried calling tech support again, they just insist that it's my hard drive and I have some virus that's causing this. 2 spyware scans and 4 full virus scans(the programs are freshly updated as well) say otherwise.
So, now that I've filled out a pretty detailed history on my deal with these jokers, is there any way I can fix this?

I understand how frustrating it can be.. what i suggest is give a call and ask teh tech support to transferr ur call to 2nd level support.... possibly ur circuit might need a rip and rebuild

it might sound bad but thats the reality........as i have a strong networking background and working with sbc is just a mere coinscidence ( my friends and me are moving out from sbc very soon)..... however a lot of my frnds and i go ahead help configure these routers... putting our jobs our scores at risk..... 2wire itself is a router and has wireless capabalities if its a 1000hg and above model..... if want to connct more than four computres( as 2wire has only four ethernet ports ) better use a hub or a switch with this 2wire..

hi mates,
I'm astounded by the 40gb /month deal?!!! I have DSL in the south-eastern US, North Carolina (and I'm out in the sticks, mostly cattle around here)... I pay about $44.00 / month for 972gb / month download. The difference is astounding, is it because of inferior cabling or just greedier companies? I can't believe it's the cabling, because our wiring around here has been here for about 80 years, most of it. Hell, alot of the time we have trouble getting dial tones for POTS (plain old telephone systems) lines; now granted they've been replacing the main trunks over the last 20 years or so, but most of the "to the curb" stuff is the same old wiring, only the mainlines have been upgraded to fibre. I thought that the country that brought us FARSCAPE, the greatest TV SCI-FI show ever! would be years ahead of us here in the carolinas.... I think that the phone companies are overcharging you guys because of limited competition, or just plain old greed! best wishes and lots of luck in lower those jerks prices... Orionway@bellsouth.net

ok people,
when you hook up a router to a modem, the modem (dsl) should FIRST be changed to BRIDGED mode... see the router needs to be in charge of logging you in to the ISP... originally the modem was doing that, but with a router hooked up, the modem should only be a dumb box and let the router do the loggin in. Now, I'm not familiar with the particular modems that SBC yahoo is using, but it really doesn't matter, just follow these steps...(BEFORE HOOKING UP THE ROUTER, WHILE THE MODEM IS STILL DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE PC VIA ethernet cable!!!!)
1. click on start, run and enter CMD and hit the enter key
2. type in IPCONFIG /ALL and hit the enter key
3. write down the ip address of the DEFAULT GATEWAY (this is the ip address for the modem)
4. close the cmd window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner
5. start internet explorer (or whatever browser you use)
6. type in the ip address that you wrote down above, usually in the format of 192.168.1.x and hit enter
7. there will be a setting somewhere on this web page that contains the entry PPPOE, change it to BRIDGED
8. be sure to save the changes, there's probably a SAVE CHANGES or similar button at the bottom of the page
9. power off your modem for at least 1 minute, just unplug the power cable
10. while the modem is off, unplug the ethernet cable from your PC and hook it up between the modem and the linksys router (or whatever brand you have), be sure the ethernet cable is connected between the modem and the router using the INTERNET ports (labeled as such) on the backs of the two boxes (there should only be one place to connect the cable on the back of the modem anyway)
11. now, hook up another ethernet cable between the computer and the router
12. turn the modem back on
13. start internet explorer
14. type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter, (if that doesn't bring up the routers config web page, then you don't have a linksys router and you should try, 192.168.1.254)
15. change the routers setting to PPPOE and enter in your login and password info, then be sure to save the changes
16. power off the router for about 1 min and then power it back on
17. start internet explorer and you should be online, forever and ever and ever...
enjoy

PS. if you have any trouble, just try unplugging the power for both modem and router for at least 1 minute and the turn the modem back on, and then the router back on, that will prob fix it, if you followed the instructions above... good luck

[QUOTE=orionway]ok people,
when you hook up a router to a modem, the modem (dsl) should FIRST be changed to BRIDGED mode...
Hi there,
following are the modems which sbc provides:
ss5260, ss5360, ss5100a, ss5100b( has five lights ), siemens4100 ( has five lights ),
only the ss5100b and the siemens4100 need to be put on bridge mode...
Even if we got these modem's the connection can work without putting the modem on bridge, we just need to make shure while configuring the router make shure that the router is set to " DHCP " or " obtain an ip address automatically ", save the settings and every thing should be up and running, if we follow this we can save some valuable time in setting up the network.... for any more clarifications post replies

I've set up 3 routers in less than six months with 2wire and I find Netgear and Dlink hard to work with. Motorola is the best router, IMO.
Okay here's how to bridge your 2wire 1070-b to any router:
1. Connect the 2wire modem directly to a computer with a cable.
o Go to »homeportal/management or http://gateway.2wire.net/management or 192.168.0.1
o Click on Configure Under Broadband link
o Put dot in Disable PVC Search
o Set VPI to 0 and VCI to 35 (depends on service provider may be 8/35, 5/32, etc). default 0 38
o Connection Type should say Direct IP
o Click Submit
o Click on Configure Services
o Uncheck Enable Routing
o Click Submit
If using software version 3.7 or higher you will need to Disable PVC Search and manually enter appropriate PVC info e.g. VPI 0 and VCI 35.
Okay here's how to setup your new router:
- 1. Connect the router directly to a computer with a cable.
2.Go to your browser, any browser but IE works best.
3. Open a web browser and log into the router (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or routerlogin.net for Netgear). It may ask you for a username and password. Default username = admin. Default password = password or 1234.
4. Fill in the blanks like what you see in this picture below, which is nothing but your DNS server and username password. If you don't know your DNS # get it here at Dslreport.com.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/7351/netgear4sn.gif
5. Now open your browser and begin surfing. If this doesn't work for you then return your router and get a new brand. It's not worth the hassle of calling tech support, they've got me nowhere. Netgear won't help you till you register (that's ridiculous.) Plus, Netgear is the slowest of the few I've tested.

hi everyone! I'm finally back once more, and feeling moons better knowing it wasn't all my fault for the bumps and glitches with SBC DSL. I had the speedstream with a Linksys router. I must have reset and reconfigured a connection a bizzilion times. I would call for tech support and the "droid" on the SBC end would say that I had a dial-up connection! I had to keep on them to change it to DSL since that was what I was paying for....they'd correct it.....then sure as xxxx it was reverted to dial-up again. I've had this for two years. I recently went to the two wire, ($20.00 less on my phone bill package!) and set up our network and connection in no time flat. What a pleasant surprise. I didn't connect the Lynksys router because that was where I had problems. I had started out not knowing a thing about routers, internet connections, etc. I know they say practice makes perfect, but I would have rather practiced for some other reason besides crashes, disconnects and just plain lousy products. Besides that, it was a bang-up learning experience.
