CD-RW Drive Not Recognising Blank CD-R

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nezangel

I'm having trouble copying some mp3's onto blank discs. I've tried several different CD-R discs and each time my computer doesn't even think there's a disk in the drive. However, it recognises any other disks in there (i.e. games or music cd's). Can anyone offer any advice as to what may be causing this & what, if anything, I can do to get it to work? I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
nezangel.

What CD-RW model are you using, and what OS? Did your CD-RW drive come with a CD or a floppy that may contain drivers ? You may also want to check the CD-RW manufacturer's website for firmware updates or something ...

And stick around for more suggestions...

Thanks for the quick response.
It's a fairly new drive so I don't think there will be any updates as yet.
It's an LG 32x10x40x CDRW & 16xDVD drive, (if that makes any sense!!). I'm using Windows MS and I don't remember the drive coming with any drivers on floppy or cd.
Hope this info helps.

Do you mean Windows ME?

Does your drive read CD-Rs or CD-RWs that have data in them?

Yes, I do mean Windows ME (mind wandering...sorry!!)

I've just tried another cd with mp3's on it and it had no problem recognising that.

are you trying to do a regular copy in windows to put the files on the disc? if you are trying it that way, it's not going to work unless you had XP, which allows you to burn cd's like that. if ME burns like that, then i did not know about it back when i was using ME.

inorder to burn your mp3's to a disc, you will need burning software. my choice of burning software is Nero

another popular flavor of burning software is Roxio Easy CD Creator

if your computer is a Dell, Gateway, Compaq, or some other brand of computer that you bought with preloaded software, then it may have burning software already loaded on it.

if you are already aware of all of this stuff, then i'll say it now, Sorry.

one other thing you should be aware of is that if you want to burn the mp3's onto a disc so that you can listen to the songs on a regular cd player, then you will have to convert the mp3's to .wav files inorder for a normal stereo cd player to read and play the songs.

again, if you are aware of all of this, sorry, but i felt like at least informing you of that before you waste time burning the mp3 files to a disc, and then it not work in your stereo.

Hi, sorry i've taken so long to respond - holiday!!

I am aware of the things you've said. I've tried a regular copy in windows AND Nero. Neither recognises that I've got a CD-R disc in my drive. It just autoimatically ejects the disc and says to put a CD-R/CDRW disc in when there already IS!!

All I'm trying to do is put mp3's onto a disc - I've done it before but I think it must be a drive error.

Thanks for your suggestions up to now, if you can help any further, I'd very much appreciate it!!

as was suggested before, do check for firmware updates, and windows as well. update the drivers, of course.

check the manufacturer's site for tech support as well. some will post known issues, and the steps to resolve them.
one thing that strangely pops into my head is: do you have this drive set as master or slave? i have heard of devices being picky about that. and make sure its in the proper connection on the cable, any jumpers (shouldnt be any, but what the hell) are set to the right setting. im assuming its not scsi, so we wont go there.

next step would be to remove it. the thorough way is to remove the drivers, shut down, physically disconnect the drive, reboot. check and make sure no drivers are loaded for it. download the latest drivers/firmware, but leave the file(s) on the desktop. shut down, reconnect the drive, and reboot. let windows do its thing and install the drive. any updates should then be applied. hopefully, that should end it.
