Is my computer messed up?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Thank you for taking the time to looking at my thread.

My name is Nate, i'm goin to give u the problem and then describe the details

Problem, when playing COunter strike, i receive an average LOW ping of 80-90 and a high ping ranging 190-300.

I've used two diffrent connections, DSL and Cable and have had the same problem

My friends have used the same connections and HAVENT gotten this problem , there fore NOT THE CONNECTIOn

I have 384 RAM, 40 GB, P4, 1.7 ghz processor, geforce fx 5200 128 agp vid card, used both retail and HL mod.

reformatted once 3 days ago, turned on and off QOS packets, tried to "tweak" via internet tweaking sites

purchased TWO nic cards to verify that wasnt the problem

so all in all, other than new motherboard and windows configs, everything has been tested and re-tested (to my kowledge)

please help, i apologize for the lengthy post, it is to insure clearer and more precise answers

... and the problem is?
After all that, you only gave us ping time, just what are you looking to fix?

Posted by: redwench

indeed. those are not terribly problematic pings, in fact theyre the normal range for broadband at peak times.

sorry if i wasnt descript enuf, the problem IS the ping!
i have dsl so that is bad ping. my friends who have played those same conditions have a ping of 40-60. I dont understand that. So to clerify, why do i have 30 average higher ping then they do. and receive 300 at times of ct/t interaction.

sigh. 30 is nothing. you dont notice it, only the computer can. a spike of 300 is also not unusual. however, you probably have some other programs that access the net that will tie up bandwidth.

Your friend in fact has NOT played in the same conditions.

With broadband connections, location matters. If it's cable, perhaps your friend lives in a less busy neighborhood that uses less bandwidth. If it's DSL, perhaps you live farther away from the station than he does.

High pings don't usually have anything to do with the computers themselves. It's usually your connection to the server that's messed up.
Try selecting servers that you actually ping lower to.

ok, for the record, we played in same conditions bc i had my comp at his hopuse and his comp at mine at several occasions, but just so u giuys know or want to help someone else, a friend told me to check, what hl was tryin to connect at.....i went home and checked, it was trin at 228.....i changed it to t1 and everything is fixed, i connect to a server b4 105 countdown and normally first one in server...help others

A ping flux of around 10 ms is normal, but 30 ms is pushing it. If you are on the same connection, and using the same rates in the game, I find that strange.

30 ms in a first person shooter is noticeable. A ping of 190-300 is not reasonable for cable (although this could be the case in your neighborhood, which is the fault of your ISP).

So, he does have a real problem. Make sure you aren't somehow running something in the background (you didn't mention your OS, but if it automatically checks for updates, check that off). Have you tried moving the NIC card to a different PCI slot?

its fixed, thank you all, it was the game tryin to connect at 228 rather than cable or dsl (i set it at t1)
