question about motherboard IDE interface
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: INeedHelp
i'm buying a new motherboard, but what's the difference between the IDE ATA and IDE ultra DMA?
Posted by: redwench
they are totally different concepts. but you dont have to worry about it, all hardware for the last several years has been both. if youre going ide, the only choice you have to make is pata or sata.
Posted by: INeedHelp
so doesn't matter if i choose ATA or ultra DMA?
and yes all my devices are IDE or EIDE, i've been told SCSI is less supported and expensive
Posted by: Null Actor
red is on crack, ultra ATA and ultra DMA are basically interchangable terms. They are both for IDE drives, and any IDE drives you own will work on them.
Posted by: INeedHelp
ok cool, can i get a final touch on the parts? if everthing is ok then i'm going to send out the order
thanks

well, depending on your budget:
get a ti4600 8x, its actually faster, if not an fx or 9700 pro.
upgrade the sound card to an audigy, 1 or 2
increase your ram speed to at least 2700, 3200 if you can afford it.
thats a good hard drive, but probably on the small side. check on the price for the 80, unless you plan on putting in your own.
if youre assembling this yourself, youll need 2 ide cables, a floppy cable, a printer cable, and a video cable. get at least 2 fans, although you can get them after market much cheaper. youll need thermal paste also if this is diy.
most of it looks good. after the cables, fans, and paste, the ram would probably be the best thing to upgrade.

bah, i wish i were on crack.

Posted by: INeedHelp
redwench, i got all the cables you were talking about but i was told the thermal paste comes with all the retail bundles
Posted by: taco_fox
If you buy a retail CPU, it usually comes with its own heatsink and a TIM
Posted by: INeedHelp
what's TIM? thermal interface material? so that's a thermal paste right? a heat sink, a fan, and a thermal paste right?
redwench, two fans for what? CPU or the case?
also, if i'm updating my sound card, is it sound blaster live! 5.1 gamer or sound blaster live! 5.1 mp3+ or sound blaster live! plantium 5.1 or it's just sound blaster live! ?
Posted by: taco_fox
Yes, a TIM is Thermal Interface Material. It's usually just a piece of wax-like material that's attached to the heatsink. It doesn't work as well as a paste, but as long as you're not overclocking, it will be fine.
Posted by: redwench
eh, those things are worthless. and once you let them heat up, switching to paste is impossible.
I meant case fans, you said the cpu was a retail package. There really is no difference between the gamers. Its just software. Double check on all those cables. 2am is not the time to find out you need one.
Posted by: INeedHelp
my case comes with 2 fans, one on top and one on the back
my sound card question is regarding drivers, i couldn't find a driver says Sound Blaster Live! Dobly (or something like that) 5.1, except they only have what i listed above, so i don't know which one to choose to update the driver of my sound card once i got it
Posted by: Azgard
Stay away from Soundblaster Live!, its not worth the money, you will get more problems then its worth.
Edit:
Click here for a better soundcard. Ive checked many reviews and have heard nothing but praise from the performance of this card. Personally im getting this soon...once I get the money..
Video card, dont waste your time and money on the Geforce 4 series card or an FX, there redesigning the card right now and honestly the FX line is pretty pathetic for all the hype. Go for a radeon 9700 if you dont want to wait, its a Direct X9 generation card, so it will have use a couple years down the line.

Not necessarily. Cleaning up is a little more difficult than paste, but it sure isn't impossible. Just use a piece of plastic (or something else firm that won't scratch the metal) to scrape off the wax, then use rubbing alcohol to clean up the rest.
Posted by: redwench
unless its an alcohol soluble wax, that wont help. its the wax that gets into the pits and valleys that is the problem, not the surface crap. any thermal gunk will do the same thing. but if its a silver or aluminum paste, youll still get decent heat transfer. wax doesnt transfer heat well at all.

Wow I would be interested in knowing who wants to put a steel based product on their CPU and Fan especially if they decide to upgrade not long after...
Posted by: INeedHelp
wait, which one should i get again? radeon 9700 or readeon 9700 pro? what's the difference anyway?
Posted by: Azgard
Speed, go for 9700 pro
Posted by: TotalRecall
The 9700 pro is clocked higher. Spring for it if you have the extra money.
Posted by: INeedHelp
ok i know this is thread already gone off topic a little, but one LAST question
what about radeon 9800 pro? should i get that instead of 9700 pro?
Posted by: taco_fox
Sure, if you don't mind spending a little more money.
Posted by: Azgard
Heres Specs for 9800
Heres Specs for 9700
The 9800 clearly dwarfs the 9700, so if you can afford it definately go for the 9800.
