StarCraft: Broodwar problems

I've recently been having quite a lot of trouble with StarCraft: Broodwar.
My system specs are as follows :
Intel Pentium III, 800 mhz
256m ram (2x DIMM 128m chips)
NVidia GeForce 256
"Game port for creatuve SB Live!" <-- which I believe is an on-board soundcard. I have a Soyo brand motherboard.
My OS is WinME.
While playing either StarCraft or Diablo2 lately, I've been getting 1 of three errors.
#1: The game will simply exit suddenly for no apparent reason, being that I am playing off-line or on-online, as though I hit ALT-F4, though this occurs randomly and without my doing.
#2: The screen goes completely black except for very small orange or green lines at the top of my screen, the system locks and I am forced to manually reboot.
#3: I get a blue screen (of death) and recieve a VMM error. I don't recall the exact error code, as this hasn't occured too frequently, but I believe it's related to the first two problems.
#4: "PStores" will cause an error in kernel32 when I click on a menu button, usually when I click on a game replay.
I was able to fix the PStores problem by simply changing pstores.exe to pstores.bak and moving it to a temp directory.
However, the other 3 problems are still occuring at random, #1 being the most common.
So far, these are the steps I have tried in order to correct this problem, and have not worked :
I've tried running in 640x480 and 256 colors, which blizzard tech suggested.
I've tried downloading the latest DirectX version.
I've tried downloading the lastest drivers for my vid card.
I've tried getting the latest VIA4in1 package.
I've tried getting the latest drivers for my motherboard.
I've tried re-installing Starcraft.
I've tried defragging my computer.
I've tried several different virus scanners.
I've tried cleaning the CD, however I know it's not a CD problem since the CD is read only when the game first starts, and not after.
I've tried running my own virtual memory settings, rather than allowing windows to handle it automatically, I set it to minimum 2 and maximum of 512.
None of the following has worked for me thus far.
These problems are specific to Starcraft and Diablo2 only, it would seem.
I've not experianced any problems similar to these while running any other program (which include quake 1, quake 2, quake 3, final burn game emulator, mame emulator, baldurs gate, etc.)
I tried running Diablo2 in windowed mode and it DID actually fix the problem temporarily, it still crashes when I run full screen, however Starcraft can not be run in windowed mode under and windows OS.
I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, even searching for a hack program that would allow me to run starcraft in windowed mode, unfortunately to no avail. It doesn't seem to be possible at all to run SC/BW in windowed mode in a windows OS.
I'm down to my last two options, which I consider totally last resort.
I know I could either try formatting and re-installing everything, or I could try getting a new OS.. Unfortunately I really am trying desperately to avoid those 2 options.
Oddly enough, the problems seem to have started occuring after I installed Final Fantasy 7 on my computer.
That game as well started having random problems, though not so frequently that I couldn't complete the game. While it was installed, and after I uninstalled it, both SC and D2 started acting up.
I seem to remember that the last time I installed FF7 was on a different system entirely from this one, and that too had similar problems that began around the time I installed FF7.
I'm not sure weather that information is relevant or not, but I really have no idea why this is occuring or how to fix it apart from formatting.
I believe the problem is related to VMM.VXD, and I've tried looking for ways to cure this problem, but so far I am at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
