My sound's screwed up

I'm having trouble w/ getting sound in wc3 to work right. It plays, but it's all stuttery, and chopped up. I've gotten the latest version on all my drivers and have DirectX 8.1. Anyway, here's my tech specs and I'd appreciate if someone could tell me a way to fix this annoyance:
Window's '98
Athlon 1500XP+
512mb DDR ram
ATI Radeon 8500 64mb video card
Onboard Sound, w/ an AC '97 driver
40gig hard disk
