The Anatomy of a DoS Attack

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just caught wind from The Group about this news (a week old, but still pretty funny - and relevant):

Steve Gibson of the Gibson Research Corporation (GRC.Com) recounts the events of that fateful month of May, where GRC.Com was brutally bombarded with Denial of Service (DoS) attacks from an alleged 13-year-old hacker.

GRC.Com, which is ironically the home of Shields UP! (an online utility that checks the security of a computer's internet connection), was kicked off the Internet on May 4, 2001 by packet flooding attacks from undetermined sources. Despite Gibson's repeated attempts to block off and thwart the hackers' attacks, the perpetrators still managed to get around the filters and kept attacking the GRC server until Gibson had to "surrender" and ask the hackers to cease their attacks.

Although probably meant to be funny, reading the GRC article leaves one with a sense of despair for what future lies ahead for the Internet. Read the article, entitled The Strange Tale of the Denial of Service Attacks Against GRC.COM. And form your own opinions...
