Computer Running/Booting Slow

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bobaroo

About a week ago my new computer started to run really slow, especially on boot up.

It use to take my computer about 10 seconds to boot up, now it takes more then a minute. When it is on the Windows XP loading screen it would use to have 3 bars go by and finish loading, now it is about 17-20 bars go by.

Also using my computer feels a lot slower. Clicking on IE or Outlook Express will no longer open them immediatly, but rather after a couple of seconds delay.

The only I did to my computer was turn it off and clean out the dust, nothing esle, so I have no clue why it is so slow.

Since you opened it up, check if all the cables are still connected, maybe you pulled one loose by accident.

this is probably obvious, but:
run (dl it first if you have to) msconfig and check the start up list.
pull up the task manager and see whats running
run spyware and virus scans
turn off any p2p or file sharing
kill any resident windows monitoring stuff
run a scan disk and defrag
check in properties and make sure that its reading the correct ram
on next boot up, watch the boot screens for ram and cpu, then go into the bios and sniff around a bit
do the usual bios/driver/windows updates
check your temps

Damn, this is really starting to piss me off.

I did the usual, and everything you said, and it still takes forever to boot up!

Might be network related ... Changed any network settings lately? Installed a new network card? Changed ISPs? Added startup programs maybe?

Posted by: Bobaroo

Nope not that I know. The only thing that I did was move the computer to a new location, but it is still hooked up to the same router/modem/ISP.

You installed SP1, didn't you?

Posted by: Bobaroo

Nope...I didn't Install it because of all the slowdowns I have heard from people.

I have also been getting a lot of BSOD, so I am going to upodate to the latest Bios v1.7 which is about a week old. Maybe that will help something.

Hey Bobaroo, give this a look, it should help you. It helped me with the same issue. No need to reformat! Just download the tool and follow the directions, trust me it will work.

Read about it here.
