cd rom problems

Cd rom will not recognise any discs?
Have been to device manager tryed removing drives,when reboot drive is back?tryed new drivers no good?
when go to device manager open cd rom drives,
it tells you the manufacturers name,but this is all jumbled up strange letters and numbers nothing like what it should be?
when cdrom not working cdrw does not work either?
sometimes when reboot drives are back again,sometimes for a week sometimes only a few hours?
1st time removed drives when rebooted drives detected working fine again?
tryed changing drive letter to no avail?
have checked power supply leads all secure?
THINK ME NEEDS SOME EXPERT HELP!!!!
would like to check other connections on drives but don't know how?
just seems strange they work 1 minute and not the next!!!!!

I think that post was the most difficult to read out of all the posts I've read.
What is the manuf.?
What OS are you using?
Are your jumpers in the correct locations?
Have you recently installed any new hardware?
So what you're saying is, it is recognized through Device Manager and in the bios but it wont read discs?

sorry was difficult but was just trying give as much information as possible yes your analysis is correct.
cdrw is ATAPI 8x4x32
dvd is MATSHITA SR-8585F.
OS WIN/ME
ps as i am typing this the drives r working fine again,but GIVE IT TIME?????????????
