internet connection problem

i am constantly having internet connection problems

first, it's not my ISP's problem, i called them whenever i have a problem and they said their server is running fine, then i tried it on the other computer too and it works

i am not running behind a router or anything, we have two cable modems, that's yet

i am using SiS 900-based PCI fast ethernet adapter and a motorola SB4200 surfboard cable modem, my ISP is charter communication

the problem is, some times, i am browsing through the net and then the connection is lost, some times when i turn on my computer, there's no connection at all

i tried to renew my IP address when that happens but it says DHCP server not available or something like that, it says something about DHCP anyway

everytime what i have to do is reset the modem with a paper clip by pressing the reset button on the back of the modem, and sometimes i have to do that serval times to get my internet to work, i am so fed up with this

anybody knows how to fix this problem please help me out

thanks

p.s. if you need more info or anything, you can IM me at FalamII through AIM

1st edit: i am running under windows XP pro

Just sounds like a lot of people are just trying to get on at once, and DHCP (which automatically assigns IP to clients) is just overloaded.

Are you sure that resetting your modem is actually doing the job or is it just the amount of time it takes to reset your modem that actually matters? (basically, have you tried just waiting to connect at another time without resetting your modem?)

"I tried it on the other computer" is rather vague. What exactly did you try? Are you saying that it does not experience the same problems? If so, have you actually used the other one extensively (for as long a time period as you use your current computer) in order to truly determine that it doesn't ever happen to the other computer? Because as you say, these problems appear only on occasion - and when you were "trying" the other computer, you may have simply been using it at a time with no problems at all.

answer: no i did not tried just waiting to connect at another time without resetting your modem

clarification: when ever i have connection problems, i ran down stair, and see if i can get on the internet with the other computer, which i can, then i ran up stair and tried again, can't, ran down, can, ran up, can't, then i stayed up and start doing reset modem routine

question: if DHCP server is too busy to assign me an IP, why while i'm surfing the net i still get disconnected, i was thinking may be that the IP has been assigned then, why am i still have DHCP problems?

if what you describe is a true picture of what is happening, your modem is gefunked. switch the modems and see if it reoccurs.

Have you've purchased 2 services from Charter? Do you have 2 different modems, a network with a router, or a hub and 2 IP addresses?

If you have 2 modems (which probably means 2 services), try switching them.
