OK, I bought a SoundBlaster 4.1 today, a DVD player and a speaker system. I installed everything, it worked fine. So I restart. When my computer restarted, an Error occured from Norton Antivirus 2003, it said that a file with a DLL extension was missing! At the same time, another message appeared saying that a vital windows file had disappeared, and that I needed to put in the Windows XP Pro CD. I don't have it anymore! During all that, the hard drive made 4 scratch-like sounds in a row, you know, and then stopped, and then started again.

Well, I ignored everything and tried to install a DVD reproduction program, Power DVD to be exact. And then, while installing, it restarted, just like that!

Then, VEERY slowly, it went on to the Windows loading screen, making the 4-times-in-a-row-scratching-noise-from-the-hard-drive sound... And then, another error appeared saying that Windows will shut down... and that something from Windows was missing... or something like that... And it does, it doesn't even reach the Choose a User screen. I think the error says that Every single time...

I guess there is something wrong with the hard drive, but I don't know. Should I reformat? I was told that I should... I have no idea on what I should do. The worst part is that the HD does that noise! Argh! Anyway, please help.

a clean wipe may fix your problem, but you're gonna have to find that xp pro disc.

if your hard drive continues to make that noise after a complete format and reinstall of xp pro, the hard drive may be dying.
