Hey I was reading a article about Microsofts new Windows XP in this morning edition of the wall street journal and it says that in the new version of IE they are going to implement those smart tags that they have been touting as a new feature in office XP.
What does this mean you ask??

Well according to the article it means that microsoft can put links on your web page without your knowledge and use them to direct people any where they please...

gee I wonder if that means it will direct people almost exclusivly to microsoft web sites....I don't know

Also they said that the feature will be available to anyone...
What does that mean?

Well if it really is available to everyone

(I am assuming as a cookie type thing, where a user would automatically have it placed on his computer at web site X and then wherever he went that cookie would scan the page for certain words and if it found them it would turn that word into a link to their site, without the other web pages knowing)

that means anyone could link one page to another without permission.
I.e:Ford oculd put links to their site on Chevys page, or AOL on Earthlinks page, etc....

Am I the only one that thinks this is one of the worst ideas ever
(to quote comic book collector man from the simpsons ??

I mean as I see it that means people can essentially hijack your visitors, and it may mean that people that don't know about these smart tags may think the link was put their by you.

I guess in the future BSRF will be linked to script kiddy and porn sites galore.

The one "good" thing is microsoft claims that using smart tags will be set to false by default.

But tell me, and ask yourself: How long will it be, before someone writes a Perl script, or a JavaScript to enabled it.. 1? 2 days?

Also microsoft says they will offer meta tags to owners of web sites that will make it so no one can smart tag their web site, but also how long will it take to find a way around that?

Anyone else as worried about this as I am or am I just paranoid?

WHAT?!? this is really unbelieveable!!

everytime MicroSoft makes another version of windows, it gets better and better (almost perfect even) and you think they will make a mistake in this one?

besides, if you like blue, windoze is great!

i dunno if/when someone will hack the web page thing (i never made a web page) but i dont think you're paranoid cuz MickySoft sometimes leaves a few gaps for hackers

and shouldnt that be "Micky$oft" ?
