I am about to go buy a DVD Player, I was told it might be a good idea to get one of these cards. So what I am curious about is it good to get one of these and why. If it is a good idea where can I get a good deal on one. I have one here that I am just reading on and they are selling it for $49.99. I found it off of a site on pricewatch.com

My final question is. I am getting a DVD Drive, I take it will replace my current cd-rom drive. I play alot of games and do alot with my cd-rom. So is it safe to use it like I do now if I get a DVD drive. Hopefully I said this clear enough.

You don't actually need a DVD decoder card to play DVDs if your computer is fast enough .. all you need is a DVD-ROM drive and DVD software.

A good DVD drive is Pioneer - it's what I have been using on both my computers at home. They're a tad noisy at times, but they work pretty well. You may also wanna try Creative or Toshiba, but since I haven't tried those, I can't tell youi if they are any good.

As for DVD software, go for PowerDVD - it's the best DVD software bar none.

If you have a slow computer and absolutely need to have a DVD-decoder card, go for the RealMagic Hollywood Plus decoder card - it usually comes bunched in with some DVD drives. You can also try Creative's DVD decoder card (forgot the name) .. I heard they were also good...

Well I think my system is pretty fast, specs below:

-------------------------
Windows 2000 Pro
Celeron 600
512MB PC133
VooDoo 4 4500
-------------------------

The decoder was just a suggestion from a friend. Will it make a BIG difference, or will I most likely not even be able to tell? I think my system would be able to handle it.

Unless you run several other programs while you're watching DVDs (I don't know why ANYONE would wanna do that), DVD software is the only thing you need...

If you surf several sites while you watch DVDs, or play games while watching DVDs (hahaha), then you might probably need that DVD decoder card...
