WTF? Robert Jordan's new book is out!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

WTF? And there wasn't even any hype about it, like the previous books ... I wonder why (maybe Robert Jordan's books are losing their touch? .... NAH)

Anyway, I agree with Nova - it would be a major headache to read the whole series again just to refresh my mind about the story ... the last book (Path of Daggers) was pretty boring... and I am looking forward to Mat Cauthon's return in Winter's Heart... The Band of the Red Hand lives!

P.S. Ion, the series is one of the most popular fantasy sagas in modern times ... you should check em out - they're pretty addictive (I still have the "brick" hardcovers at home - the whole series look like concrete slabs on my bookshelf)...

Gah

This is the WOT?

I read the first book (after reading all 13 books in Eddings' belgarion series) and I wasn't impressed.

Was just.. longwinded. I picked up the second and 3rd books but after 1/3 of the second book I began to smell something fishy.

I picked out all the books I could get from the libary, skimmed through them..

Well well, what do we have, the same thing happening over and over to different people in different places at different times.

I don't mind long books, as long as my interest is sustained, I almost wanted to skip pages to get to something interesting in the first 2 of WOT.

well, i finally finished the book. it wasn't all that i had hoped for but it was better than Path of Daggers. I *might* read the next one when it comes out .....

ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT. Here is ya'll problems!!!! First off, The book does not have to be what you expected. It is a story. One that is being to told by ROBERT JORDEN. One that he thought up. He does not have to bend the tale to make it what you expected. If it is not what you expected then stop reading it.

And that is what allows me to read most books. Beacause I do not sit around while reading the book and go this is not as good as the other's. I read it knowing that it is a story and that is can come out anyway he choses. Not how i the reader feels. If every writer sat down and wrote what the readerd expected to happen in thier books. Then everybook would be boring.....because everybook would be the same.

I know atleast 10 ppl at my school who would sit here and say the same thing I had. We all have heard the opionion. "it wasn't all that i had hoped". So maybe it was not what you hoped. But I bet you have said the same for another series. And another. I bet you have looked at the back of books in a book store and read it then discarded it. B/c it was not what you hoped for. Well keep searching. because maybe one day you will find a book by a auther that hopes for the same thing as you do.

DemonBob, I appreciate your comments, but telling readers to just swallow what Robert Jordan is giving us without doing a little bit of criticism is a little unfair.

The reason we loved Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series in the first place was because it had a really nice story. Up to the Crown of Swords, I was really into the books because the story was riveting, and it kept me on the edge of my seat with every piece of prose that was weaved.

But the Path of Daggers was not like the other books in the series. The pace of the story that I have come to love was sorely missing in it. I treated the book more as a "filler" for the next book in the series than an enjoyable read, like the earlier books. In other words, it was not as memorable, and I am sure many readers will agree.

All readers are critics. We criticize a book because we have expectations. The only REASON we follow the Wheel of Time series is because of expectations. Why else would we follow the series if not for anticipation on events that we are all anxious to know?

The magic of the Wheel of Time series is that each book was different in its own right. Each book concentrated on a specific number of the characters in the whole series. Each book offered something that piqued our interest.

As with all huge series, there are lemons. Path of Daggers is not a lemon, but it is the closest thing to a lemon that I can come up with. It was an excruciating read. I cannot get into the story. It was like pulling teeth - you can't wait for it to be over. It was not a bad book, but it was certainly not as good as the early ones. It lacked something.

I have not read Winter's Heart yet, so I cannot give any opinions about it. I am still re-reading the whole series again so I can keep myself up-to-date (already halfway through The Shadow Rising). As a reader, I have my own opinion, as everybody else does. The reason Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is popular is because many readers like it. If readers stop liking it, the series will decay and die a slow and painful death.

I'm not saying Robert Jordan should let his story be dictated by what his readers want. What I am saying is that Robert Jordan's most recent books do not hold my interest as his earlier ones did. I know he has a story to tell, but it doesn't meant I have to LIKE his story all the time. I am not a sponge.

I love his books, but it doesn't mean I have to ALWAYS like what he's telling me. I am an avid reader, not a cult follower http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif

I am not telling to, or commanding you to like what he throws at you. http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif I just wish that people would stop saying that line "it is not what I hoped for", "it was not up to my expectations". Now it would be better to talk about what may happen next? Or something like how he could have compressd it alittle. One of the major problems I see is that he is bascilly forced to wirte the book in a certain time. I think that if he would have had more time to write the path of daggers. It might have been better. All his fans are constanly asking. When is the next one comeing out. And tor is no better. Also, did anyone notice all the typo's in winter's heart?????

It's not a matter of 'what I hoped for' it was a matter of the book being pure filler.

Jot down the new facts about the story line that Jordan put in PoD. Can you get any? Not really. I can think of one offhand. All it does is fill some pages.

And Jordan definately isn't rushed... he takes as much time as he wants. He told me so at a book signing. If I hope for anything in the next book, I hope winter's heart focuses on moving the story forward, rather than just filling pages. I'll read it sooner or later.
