Freeze up after bootup

Every time I bootup of my (old) 533 PIII, 98se, it locks up, and turns off my monitor. After shutting the second bootup is always successful, but recently I've had it freeze/lockup after running several applications (alt-ctrl-del won't even work only a shutdown & boot up does).

Is the bios/cmos to blame? I'd sure like some advice!

so basically every other boot doesn't work? Or is it only after the computer's been off for a while? If it's the second, I'd have to say it's a bad CMOS battery that won't hold a charge very long, and a bios that chokes on a dead CMOS but puts new values in each time it finds them missing. Try replacing your CMOS battery.
