A new MP3 format was unveiled yesterday, promising double the sound quality as older conventional MP3s while using only half the space. The new MP3 players will be able to play older MP3s, but older MP3 players will not be able to play this newer format because the audio data is split into two streams.

Currently, the new codec as not been adopted by any digital music companies. For commercial companies, the codec will cost around 50 per cent higher than the conventional MP3, while it is being offered for free to non-commercial decoder programmers.

A demo of the new MP3Pro encoder has been released by RCA. Download it and test if for yourself here.
