Networking question

I wanted to run a FTP server on my computer. I had everything setup, however my friend couldn't connect to it using my IP address. I think the problem is because I'm connecting through a router - when I checked the connection properties, it shows that my IP address is a LAN address (i.e. 192.168.1.xxx).

So in order to get the real IP I'm connecting to the internet, I used www.whatismyip.com . I assume that is the correct IP. I gave it to my friend and it still wouldn't work. Is it because my friend's computer is only pointing towards the "general" internet connection in my house, and not towards the specific router address so that it reaches directly to my computer?

If that's the case, what should I do so that my FTP server will work?

(I'm running WinXP pro, and behind a ZoneAlarm firewall. I'm sure it's not my firewall's problem because my server was working before I moved to this house and used a connection behind a router)

You need to forward port 21 on the router to the computer running the FTP server.

If you are using a home router, like a Linksys, or Netgear, it may also be a firewall and require you to open the FTP port, and or allow your friends gateway access.

Check your modle of router, and look for a tech manual at the manufacturers website.
