Diablo 2 installing problems
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am having serious problems with playing Diablo 2. I just recieved the game and installed it with no problems. I clicked on "Play Diablo 2", but after that the screen went black(my monitor light started to blink). I tried to move my mouse but nothing happened. I hit the Enter key and the screen went directly to the mode select screen. I clicked on Single Player and I was taken to the character select screen. After I chose my character and their name, I clicked on OK and the screen once again turned black, with my monitor light blinking. I tried to move my mouse, hit random keys, and turn my screen off and on but nothing worked. I could hear the sounds of the game fine but the screen was just black. Someone please help me. I returned my game and recieved a different copy but the same problem still happened. My systems specs are:
Intel Pentium 4 processor 1.4 GHz
256 MB RDRAM
60 GB Hard Drive
Video Card 32MN Nvidia chip M64 TNT2
Windows Me
...I don't remember what my sound card was...
Please help me.

Seems theremay be something wrong with your video drivers... What detonator version are you using on your computer? Is it an OEM computer, like Dell, Gateway or Compaq? If it's an OEM computer, your computer manufacturer's site may have some updated drivers for your video card.
If it's not an OEM computer, or if you don't know if it is or not, then try going to the nVidia website and download the latest detonator reference drivers for Win9x. Install that (follow instructions), and see if it works.
If it doesn't work, try installing the latest patch for Diablo II. Download it from Blizzard's website, and install it.
If no go, run the video test for D2, and choose DirectDraw 2D mode and see if the game runs fine .. if it does, use it for a while until we can troubleshoot your problem ...
Try all the things above first, and let us know if it works or not. And stick around for more suggestions. Good luck.

I tried everything you said and the game still continues to not show any picture. I am even further confused since my other PC title works.

So it shows the black screen even in DirectDraw? Did you encounter any errors during video test?
Hmmm, do you know the manufacturer of your computer?

Yep, it still shows a black screen in DirectDraw. Running the video test isn't a problem at all. It completes error-less and it recommends that I should use the latter choice. The manufacture of my comp is Systemax.

What version of detonator drivers are you using?
Posted by: Evadrazoon
I'm a bit computer illiterate...where could I find that information from?
Posted by: Canis Lupus
You said you did everything I suggested... so did you download and install the latest detonator drivers from nVidia's site or not? The latest drivers from nVidia's site is 12.41...
Okay, right-click an empty part of your desktop, choose Properties, then choose the Settings tab, then Advanced, then Adapter, and click on the Properties button. From the Driver tab, tell me what driver version number is.
Make sure to upgrade all your drivers - especially video and sound .. do you, by any chance, have a Soundblaster Live! card in that machine? If so, try downloading updated drivers for those too...

Here's what it says:
Adapter/Driver information
Manufacture: NVIDIA
Features: Direct Draw 1.00
Software version: 4.0
Is this the information you were wanting?
When I clicked on "Change" in the Adapter tab, it said my computer would look for updated drivers. After it was done looking it said the best driver was already installed.

I have an AC'97 sound card if that helps in figuring out the problem.

I suggest going through the steps Canis suggested, especially downloading an updated Detonator driver from here. If that doesn't help, try to find the manufacturer of the video card and download their drivers.
Also, check the System properties (Start - Settings - Control Panel - System) under the device manager tab for any yellow !. These usually suggest IRQ conflicts. Good luck.

I installed the latest driver and the game still isn't working.

Okay, try doing this if you haven't done it yet ...- Completely uninstall Diablo II from your computer.
- Scandisk and Defragment your hard drive
- Click on START -> Windows Update and download the latest critical and recommended updates from Microsoft's Product Updates section.
- Try reinstalling Diablo II and run the Video Test ... choose DirectDraw 2D first and see if that works.
- If DD2D works, run the Video Test again and switch to Direct3D mode.
Post back on your progress...

...the game still doesn't work. I also purchased Half Life: CS and that didn't work either(it had the same problem as Diablo 2). It must be something severe...

I figured out the problem. I needed to change my adapter setting. Heh...now I've just got one other problem....
