Cable Select??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I read somewhere that switching my raid drives to cable select would improve performance on my system. I'm wondering if this is true?

Both raid drives are set to master on IDE ch 3 & 4

My system is:

AMD 900Mhz t-bird
Abit KT7A-Raid
512meg Micron Cas3 PC133 (256 x 2)
WD 30gig ATA100 7200rpm (c boot)
IBM 75GXP 45gig ATA100 7200rpm x2 (raid-0)
HP 9110i 8x4x32 CD-RW
Toshiba DVD 16x
LS 120 Super Disk
Asus V7700 Geforce 2 GTS 32meg DDR
SB Live Platinum w/Live Drive
Modem Blaster 56k V90 USB
11 cooling fans (and growing)

I haven't heard anything about this, but Laggy is the raid master, not me. Speaking of master, that is what your raid drives are both supposed to be set on right?

Where did you read this from? Never heard of such a thing... for one thing, cable select might actually slow down the boot-up process because the motherboard is trying to assign drives, as opposed to being already assigned beforehand when you choose Master.

And also, most RAID instructions specifically state that both drives should be set to Master, or both Slave ... there is a reason why the instructions did not say cable select

Then again, that's what I know. If this tweak actually works, I don't know - one thing I learned from tweaking RAID setups is not to mess with something that already works - especially something in RAID 0

both drives should be on master. all cable select does is try and automatically assign a drive to master or slave... it won't speed anything up.

thanks you two for backing me up lol

Thanks guys......Don't remember where I read that............
Ya both drives are set to master on its own ide channel 3/4.....Just looking into any tweaks.................

It works now, like they say "If it aint broke...don't fix it"

cable select is a bad idea that fortunatley didnt become popular. but it does require ur motherboard to recognize cable select devices and special IDE cables to send and receive the signals for that method. it does slow things down and doesnt work with RAID

Ah ah! I was wondering what this "cable select" option was when I bought my new 40 gig Fujitsu drive. The docs didn't talk much about it, and it gave me a puzzled look when I was playing with the jumpers. In the end, I just ignored it, and set the HD to master. I think though that cable select is a stupid idea...wonder who came up with THAT one?
