Software?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I am wondering if there is any software (preferably free) that can do the following:

On some websites there are PDF forms, and the only way to fill out these forms is to first print them and then hand fill them.

I have Adobe Acrobat 5.0. I am wondering if there is a software which can, somehow, scan the form (without the actual scanner) and let me fill the form and save it too?

Thanks in advance.

Since you say you have Adobe Acrobat 5, you can do it using just that program, altho it really depends on the PDF form you want to fill up:

This is taken directly from Adobe's Support Page for Acrobat:

Determining Whether a PDF Form Can Be Completed On-screen

To determine if you can complete a PDF form on-screen, verify that it contains form fields and check for restrictive security settings. (For more information about PDF security settings, refer to the online Adobe Acrobat Guide.)

To determine whether a form contains form fields:
1. Open the form in an Acrobat product.
2. Select the Hand Tool, and then drag it over fields in the PDF form. The form contains form fields if the Hand Tool changes to
-- an I-beam (the Text Select Tool, which you use to enter text in a field)
-- a pointing hand (which you use to select an option)

Note: If you use Acrobat 4.0 or later, you can verify that a form contains form fields by selecting the Form Tool -- Acrobat will then highlight any form fields.

If the PDF form does not contain form fields, do one or more of the following:
-- Print the form and complete it by hand.
-- Use the free text tool (included with Acrobat 5.x) or the text annotation tool (included with Acrobat 4.x and Acrobat Business Tools 4.x) to type text in the document. For more information about using the Text Annotation Tool and Free Text Tool, see the Acrobat user guide.
-- If you use Acrobat 4.0 or later, and the PDF form doesn't have restrictive security settings, you can use the Form Tool to create form fields. For information about creating form fields, refer to the following sources:
- "PDF Forms" in the Acrobat 5.0 user guide or "Creating and Using PDF Forms" in the Acrobat 4.0x user guide. To access either guide, open Acrobat and choose Help > Acrobat Help (5.0) or choose Help > Acrobat Guide (4.0x).
- Acrobat Forms JavaScript Specification. To access the specification, open Acrobat and choose Help > Acrobat JavaScript Guide (5.0) or choose Help > Forms JavaScript Guide (4.0x).
- Acrobat Forms Data Format (FDF) Toolkit SDK, available from Adobe's Web site at http://partners.adobe.com/asn/devel...sdk/forms.html.
- The Acrobat Forms Resources sections on Adobe's Web site:
http://www.adobe.com/epaper/feature...rform/main.html
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrob...nerseforms.html
www.adobe.com/epaper/tips/acr5forms/main.html.

To check the security settings of a PDF form:
1. Open the form in an Acrobat product.
2. Do one of the following:
-- In Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat Approval, choose File > Document Security, and then click Display Settings in the Document Security dialog box.
-- In Acrobat Reader 5.0, choose File > Document Security.
3. If Not Allowed appears next to "Changing the Document," "Authoring Comments and Form Fields" or "Adding or Changing Annotations and Form Fields" in the Document Security dialog box, you must change these two security settings to Allowed before you can complete the PDF form on-screen. To change the security settings, do one of the following:

Note: If you use Acrobat Reader, you cannot change the security settings.

-- In Acrobat 5.0:
a. Click OK in the Document Security dialog box.
b. From the Security Options pop-up menu, choose Acrobat Standard Security, and then click Change Settings.
c. In the Permissions section of the Standard Security dialog box, deselect "No Changing the Document" and "No Adding or Changing Comments and Form Fields," and then click OK.

Completing IRS Tax Forms

You can complete PDF versions of certain IRS tax forms on-screen with any Acrobat product, including Acrobat Fill In, which is distributed exclusively by the IRS. To obtain Acrobat Fill In, call the IRS at 800-829-3676 and request IRS Publication 3207, or visit the IRS Web site at http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/bus.../smbus-cd.html.

Note: You cannot electronically submit completed PDF forms to the IRS.

Not all PDF forms on the IRS Web site contain form fields. For example, the PDF forms at www.irs.gov/forms_pubs/forms.html must be printed and completed by hand, whereas the PDF forms at www.irs.gov/plain/forms_pubs/fillin.html can be completed on-screen with any Acrobat product.

For technical support for Acrobat Fill In, see the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov/plain/forms_pubs/fillin-help.html.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
