explorer.exe generating errors

Hello Sirs, or Madams.

One of our computers on our network here crashed (or so the user claims)
and now Windows 2000 does not boot up completely.

It appears to be in a constant loop of displaying the error message -

"Explorer exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need
to restart the program."

I start the computer in safe mode and i receive the same message as well.
In safe mode i receive this additional message.

"The instruction at 0x77fcb269 referenced memory at 0x00520020. The memory
could not be written"

The computer has been rendered useless.

I suspect a virus?

I would like your opinion on the matter before I attempt an operating system repair.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Change the memory with another computer. See if the problem follows the memory.

Thanks for the info..

I was however able to get the system running again before you posted your reply.

After researching the issue I found information indicating that it might be some kind of spy ware on the system causing the error. I ran the ad-aware program on the system under a different log on name (that was another thing.. the problem only occured when a specific user logged onto windows 2000) and I cleaned out the spy ware from the system.

The problem seems to be fixed so far.. Im keeping my fingers crossed.
