Ars Technica has a great write up on interfacing your PC with shortwave radio. If you're a complete shortwave radio newbie like myself, the article is a good stepping stone for plugging in to this widely used medium of communication:
Shortwave signals are global in reach. They make use of the earth's ionosphere, and can skip from one part of the globe to another quite easily thanks to a propagation effect known as sky wave. Depending on solar conditions, atmospheric interference, and the time of year, a shortwave listener (SWL) in the USA may hear stations as far away as Africa, Central Asia, Australia, and East Asia. Such broadcasts can broaden a listener's worldview, enhance his understanding of global events and culture, and even provide for him technical challenges in a hobby that is as alive as ever. Listeners who seek out long distance stations are known as Dxers. The term DX is an old telegraph term meaning "Distance" thus you'll see DX used a lot in shortwave discussions and in this article.
