Warcraft 3 freezes

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I am having a problem running Warcraft 3 on my computer. It hangs randomly everytime I am playing. I tried using the -opengl switch but it still freezes at random. I also tried disabling the 3d positional audio.

My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
256MB DDR Ram
ATI Radeon 7500 /with the War3 tested version
( I also tried upgrading to latest drivers)
Avance AC'97 Audio
Windows XP Professional

That's about it. I also upgraded to DX9.0 but nothing.

and then, i would try windows update

and then, i'd run the tests in dxdiag

As you check out other forums on other sites, you may notice that this happens to a lot of people, and no matter what they try, and they seen to try everything, they can't seem to resolve the freezing or rebooting. Often WC3 is the only application that is causing this problem. I've finally posted my dilemma at battle.net, with all the details. Here's the link if you wish to follow it:

(Scroll to 'AarghMatey') I'm hoping to get a response from Blizzard. We'll see.

I've noticed the majority of people with the problem seem to have Athlon processors and Windows XP like I do. Not always, but quite often.

Good luck!!!!

Lots of ppl seems to have this problem, there seem to be a pattern ATI Video card and win XP.
The game was very choppy and froze occasionally despite having a machine above the game spec( dell Inspiron 8200, ATi Radeon 9000,384 meg of ram 2ghz p4). I also have Pc with Athlon XP1800, 64megNvidiageforce4. The game runs perfectly on this pc( despite having 256meg of ram.
I solved it on my inspiron doing the following:
Control panel, system properties, advance tab, Click setting under the performance tab, click advance and make sure That both processor scheduling and memory usage are set to give priority to program(on my machine it was set to background processes). Since I changed these settings the game runs perfectly at 1600x1200 all video option on high and I do not have either choppy graphics or freeze. My Theory Is that wether XP default settings are optimised for background processes, which seems odd, or that the ati driver modify that setting on installation .
May be another application can cause that as well.
Worth a try anyway, and good luck

Well, I was able to permanently solve this problem. I tried checking and tweaking EVERYTHING, every kind of driver and update to every piece of hardware I had. My motherboard has a neat little monitoring app, and through it I would clear out memory as I played WC. This helped minutely. I reinstalled OS and eventually wiped my PC clean and reinstalled everything (I needed to do this anyhow).

At this point, I was still getting the error, so I started in again from scratch and re-ran memory testing software, this time I trying some different freeware apps I hadn't tried before.

I ran the memory tester overnight, and in the morning, low and behold, I had a memory error. I re-ran it, and once again, memory error. Previous memory testing apps did not find the error, so I had written off bad memory as the issue.

I had two sticks of 256 DDR RAM, so I sent away for 1 stick of 512 DDR RAM. Awesome price, less than a hundred bucks. I took out one of my Ram sticks and replaced it with the new RAM. I got lucky the first time, because now I can play Warcraft 3 and The Frozen Throne without a problem. For the first time I can set everything to high and play without any errors or choppiness.

Thanks to the motherboard monitoring app, I can see that my PC running WC utilizes around 270 MB of RAM. What I believe was happening was as soon as the memory needs exceeded 256MB, the second stick of RAM went into action and since it had an error, I would crash.

It looks like when I run WC, I need more RAM than any other game and application I use. That's why it was then only program that caused this problem. And because the other memory tests did not find the corruption of my RAM, I found myself in quite a quandry, unable to figure out what the hell was going wrong.

My advice is, if you are in the same boat I was and can afford it, try some new RAM. If you have and still get the error, be sure you are not corrupting the RAM yourself with how you handle it. I hear static electricity can mess it up. If you have not tried replacing RAM, you may be in luck!

As Brian Regan says, "Take Luck!"
