Need help with new D2 Patch

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Skelaroar

Since I have downloaded the new patch I get this error all the time
UNHANDLED EXCEPTION
FLT_DIVIDE_BY_ZERO (c000008e) <-- 5-10 minutes(more or less)
after joining a game
It crashs and freezes
then i have to ALT+TAB
to get out of D2.

Someone recommended changing the video mode but that didn't work
either. If anyone knows any way that I can play this game again
please let me know. Thanks

What are your complete system specs, like the video card, processor, etc.? And what operating system are you running?

Make sure to download and install the latest drivers for your video card. Post back with the specs of your machine so we can help you better

I use a p2 400 with 128 ram and a 3dfx card. Monster Diamond 2 I think it is. I use windows 98. I've heard of other people having this problem also. I have the 3dfx glide for my video settings also. Thanks for any help

Hmmm, pretty old video card you have there ... did you try it using DirectDraw 2D and see if it shows the same behavior? If it runs fine on DD2D, then it may be your video card drivers that are the culprit ... either try to find the drivers that will work best with D2 and DirectX 6 (or 7?), or buy a new video card.

Then again it may be a D2 patch bug. Try it first on DirectDraw 2D and see if it works (or was that what you meant by trying another video mode and it didn't work?).

the old voodoo2 drivers are not compatable with D2 im surprised it even ran to begin with. ur probably going to be stuck playing in either D3D or 2D using ur primary vid card

:Here is the real answer:
(from the blizzard open tech support pgae)
I am also experiencing the problem, and being the stubborn, hard headed person I am, I spent a day researching it.

If you've noticed, the problem always occurs when your mouse cursor is near the characters feet and either mouse button is engaged. It is a common problem with the patch and blizzard is trying to fix it. In the meantime, I suggest, be careful with who you attack (no randon clicking), and when you're running/moving, keep the cursor as far away from you as possible.

If you have any questions about this, e-mail me at ch1xxx@home.com

I have more information if needed.

Hmm, yeah, Mensho mentioned it in his post last Sunday. Although I wouldn't exactly call that a REAL solution... it's like saying, "hey, to fix this problem, don't play it like you normally would."

A REAL solution would be to actually fix it with another patch, so that it won't crash when you click ANYWHERE on the screen. I am sure people will be equally mad at Microsoft if MS said, "in order not to crash in windows, don't click on the START button..."

There is still no real solution, just a band-aid solution, and we'll wait and see if Blizzard gets to fix this one...
