Greyed-out attachments?

This may be the most basic quick-fix question but I just don't know how to get around it.
When I get an e-mail through my OutlookExpress, invariably the attachments are greyed-out and can't be opened. The ever-helpful computer tells me that it has judged them to be unsafe and won't let me open them. It also plays mind games with me about documents it previously opened and now won't a month later.
I tried sending them to my yahoo e-mail address and see that all the attachments were written text documents, written to me by people I know. If I really want them to go to the Outlook express, I have to copy and paste them onto a new e-mail and send them to myself. (Sometimes my husband's friends send him things but I don't want him rummaging around in my yahoo).
How do I persuade the computer to let me open things?

Make sure the "Do not allow attatchments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." option in tools -> options -> security is disabled in Outlook Express.

Make sure you know what the file is before you open it. Also I recommend (especially if you run Windows) you download a virus scanner, and scan the attachments for viruses yourself.
