router problem

hello all

this is my first post...hopefully i can get some kinda of help. I am nowhere near as techie as i see some of you folks are so here goes:

I have a Netexcell IM104 4-port router.... it installed fine and I can surf the net on both my desktop and laptop fine, however when I attempt to get thru access my access my work server from home I can get through the firewall prompts succesfully and authenticate myself, yet can't perform or launch any of the firewall applications... I asked my tech @ work abt this and he pointed out that some routers can act as firewalls themselves and that is what is preventing me from using the applications on our work server from home. He made mention that I need access or use (i forget the exact verbage) the ''port 500'' on my router and that if i call the tech support line they should be able to walk me thru it...well that all fine and dandy and I'd be all peaches n'cream if it wasn't for the fact that Netexcell is no more... no website, no line, NADA

I am and a loss for what to do at this point, as the only way to access what i need from work is to go directly thru my cable modem without the router connected.

I hope this made some sense and/or was somewhere in the neighborhood of coherent because again, I'm at a loss and feel helpless at this point...HELP

Thanks in Advance to anyone able to help.

What the tech probably said is that you need to do some port forwarding on your Netexcell.

Hopefully you still have the documentation that came with your router. I tried to find it for you on the internet, but, as you said, Netexcell is no more, and their support site has disappeared. According to some of the sites still selling Netexcell routers, the router has a web-based configuration console. I know on my router, I just type the router's IP address into the Address bar on my browser to get to the configuration console.

Once you're in the router's configuration console, there should be an option to set up port forwarding. Again, I can't walk you through it since I've never used a Netexcell and there's no documentation out there...

Thanks for the Advise Shalome... i managed to get to the web-based cosole for the router, yet It looks completely foreign to me.

I've looked everywhere for this ''port forwarding'' option but find nothing.

Here are the Tabs/Options that I see:

Broadband IP Gateway ver 1.02
--------------------------------------
Global Port

Local Port
-Advanced Setup
Management
Virtual Server
Packet Filter
Static Route
Check Email
Dynamic DNS

-Network Status
WAN IP Status
Sessions List
Users List
System Log

-Others
Factory Reset
Save Configuration
Firmware Upgrade

-------------------------------------

I'm thinking it's either something I have to do in the Global Port or Local Port Areas???? Help????

Thanks Again in advance....

It would probably be in advanced setup.

If you have not yet figured it out. To port forward on that router click on virtual server. There you can enter tcp/udp/ftp or whatever and the ip to forward to.
