Win 2000 Server compatibility with Win XP clients

Greetings,
Am attempting to assist our IT staff in solving problems with 10 new IBM NetVista workstations using XP Pro that are connected to our Win 2000 server. Seem to be lots of slow downs using Word off the server and printing fom other clients through the server. Some say we should take a step back and install W2K on all ten new clients.
Could you list a few less drastic attempts to solve this ? Would it be better to upgrade the server to XP Pro? Thanks,
Craig

Make sure the workstations AND the server are all on the latest service packs.

Your slowdowns are probably because the XP machines are not using the classic Explorer interface. The new XP Explorer likes to show a bunch more information and pulls that info from the server.
