Hey resident troubleshooters extraordinaire!
Here is the ERROR message:
EMPIRES2 caused an invalid page fault in
module EMPIRES2.EXE at 0167:004xxx...etc.
I can run the AoK Trial versions on my PC. So I bought the CD, and it DOESN'T run! (It installs correctly.) I went back to Future Shop and exchanged the box for another...SAME PROB! Grrr.....I've done all my Windows Updates too.
Here's the details...
My PC:
Windows 98 w/ DirectX 9.0
P1 MMX 225 Mhz
128 RAM
4 Mb VGA (***methinks this may be the problem??***...MSN asks for a 2 MB/2D video card, now I played the Trial Version, so I assume it isn't this...)
over 1 Gb of free HD space
ALL OF THESE APPEAR to COMPLY w/ SPEC's. on the AoK Box.
Thank you for helping, and have a great weekend!
Eric

Have you tried looking for an update for AoK?? Windows gets updates but so do softwares.

Hi AngstMerchant,
Thanks for taking the time to help. I downloaded and ran a couple of updates that MSN had, and the same error occurs. )-:
I don't get it. The TRIAL version works fine, so I'd expect the CD game version would too. I've uninstalled, re-installed, and tried SAFE MODE loading through one of the updates I got from MSN.
In the meantime I'm searching the WWW for matching events like mine.
Any more suggestions from you (or anyone else ftm) are greatly appreciated. Maybe I'll be able to help others from this learning experience.
Thanks,
Eric

Sounds like a memory error within your operating system, not a problem with your system specifications or the game itself.
Try these steps:
Uninstall both the Age of Kings trial version and regular version.
- Go to Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs
- Find and uninstall the Age of Kings software.
- Reboot.
Run a scandisk and defrag.
- Go to Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools.
- Run Scandisk.
- Go to Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools. Run Disk Defragmenter. This may take a while.
- Reboot.
Reinstall the full Age of Kings game.

Thank you Shalom,
I'll do that. I just came back from Future Shop (having returned the AoK Program) with SimCity 3000 Unlimited. The game spec's? No problem! I installed it and sure enough the SAME ERROR...
Really, I'm grateful to get help! I'm sure I'll be much wiser when I come out the other end of this problem.

I would also suggest going to Microsoft Windows Update to download all patches/hotfixes/updates available for your operating system, if you haven't already done that.

Thanks again, as well for the link!
So, perhaps I am in error about my hardware capability?
Under "System" (in Control Panel it says "No PC Card sockets are installed". Does this mean I don't have the Graphics card after all? The man who built my PC said I have 4MB of Video and I ASSUMED it was for graphics.
P.S. - - I've gone to MSN for updates and downloaded all the critical ones. I have also done a DirectX diagnostic, and I have tried running the program after I reset the graphics performance (under System, in Control Panel) to "Basic accelerator functions" (recommended when user has problem running a program).
Sincerely,
Eric
