What did I do now?

I was opening up the computer after a routine fdisk and near format. To clean out the floppy disk and basically pressurize air most of the dust out of there. So I try to remove the floppy notice that I can't remove it from the front so I have to remove it backwards. I have to remove my memory stick for this so I do so. Voila, memory stick is in zip bag and floppy is out. I clean floppy replace put power and ide cable in and then put the memory back in. I reconnect everything as usual, close up the comp and think I'm done. I connect the power cable...nothing. I take it out open it up and try to figure out what in the hell is wrong with the thing. Apparently nothing, because I connect it while it's open and it turns on so I'm like ok...power supply is acting up. Put it back in its case. I turn it on and I'm expecting to see a screen and all that. Nothing. It's on, but the keyboard just doesn't respond, the cd drives are dead but I can see the fan, the video cards fans(voodoo 5500) and the processor fans working away). I check the power connections...everything's fine. Anyone have ANY idea what's up? Some parts of the motherboard must be working since the processor starts up and that's connected to the motherboard...but otherwise I'm lost.

reseat the ram. you may also have bumped the cpu while you were fooling around in there. you dont want to know what the other option is.......

Sadly, I have an idea what the other option is . Well, I'll try reseating the ram doubt it'll work. I'm pretty damn careful when I'm opening up the computer and messing around I make sure not to hit anything but you may be right.

Hmm, just noticed that the fan is making an unnaturally loud noise(as opposed to the usual) but it may just be the fact that the hard drives aren't powering up.

Well, I got it to turn on. I don't know WHAT I did. Since I was just giving up and moving one of my harddrives to the other comp but it turned on but I was unable to format C: through fdisk so I just am putting the Win2k cd and letting it go from there. I guess it was the reseating the memory multiple times. Thanks. I'll try to see if there are any more problems.

and I connect the other hdd and it dies...again...to me it seems like the power supply just can't take it anymore.

It's just start-stopping. I don't know what that means. Exactly. Any ideas?

power supply or motherboard. unless theres a short in that harddrive.

Posted by: Rassy-C0W

Well I'm gonna try replacing the power supply in a few...so if that's not it, then I have no idea what is. That hard drive(the one I added in and all the problems started again) works fine on this computer...beats me.

Well after many talks with a friend we have finally determined it to be a bad ramstick. Thanks.

Please tell me that wasn't a ZipLock bag?!?!?!

Posted by: Rassy-C0W

Nah it wasn't a ziplock bag. I just call 'em zip bags. Why the fear of the almighty though?

Btw installed new memory, same problem. It swooshes on and off. It isn't the power supply because without ANY memory it swooshes on and stays on. So, so far we can tell it wasn't the memory...it was something else. What that something else is..I have no idea. The Cpu I'm guessing but the cpu was working in between the computers insane phases.

ahem. there is one obvious part.......

Posted by: Rassy-C0W

hmm let me guess the most dreaded part to say...the motherboard?

Posted by: redwench

you said it!!!!!

Posted by: Rassy-C0W

So technically the motherboard can be damaged while still turning on or just some specific part of ye olde motherboard?

Posted by: redwench

oh sure. wacky motherboards are common
